See this lovely cake plate? Notice anything missing? Well spotted: there's no cake. That's because, once again, despite what you might read on Facebook, Plaxo, Voiceover Universe, or anywhere else, it is not really Peter O'Connell's birthday nor is it Drew Hadwal's. You boys will just have to wait your turn.

True. Today isn't my birthday. Like Peter, I'm wary of posting too much personal information on social networking and other similar sites. However, there seems to be much activity on my "Wall" this morning. Hence, I should post and make the necessary apologies. Several of my own family members have offered greetings. Um, duh!?
I must also take the opportunity to apologize for my absence from this most august (birthday hint) panel for the past year. As Ms. McKitrick can attest, we've been embroiled in an IVR project of Sisyphean proportions. And it ain't over. The project has been mired by numerous team changes and errors on the client side causing additional frustration and obfuscation on our part. Thanks to Mary's profound professionalism and saintly patience, we've managed to sally forth. However, I must admit, I've considered falling on a dagger or two..or three..or...
Also, two of my largest clients found themselves bereft of clients. And naturally that trickled down to moi. As a result, and kinda on a lark, I applied for a part time barista position. To my surprise I was hired. The goal was to generate some quick cash while marketing to replace lost business. Like my first marriage, it seemed like a good idea at the time.
At first, the job seemed interesting. Learning to pull espresso (or expressio as they say here in Tejas) and creating all its drink iterations was fascinating. Also, it got me out of the cloistered confines of my booth and among real, living people.
Now, six months later I've come full circle and realized WHY I elected to make my living in the the cloistered confines of my booth. People who prefer their Joe prepared in what I call a "Foo Foo" manner, are snippy and rude. They approach the counter with a sense of entitlement and generally present a condescending deportment to boot. I’m the kind of person who gives it as good (or badly) as I get it. So, I'm not expecting a sticker on my name plate extolling the virtues of my being named "Employee of the Month" anytime soon.
Bookings for January and February are looking good. So, I hope the day will soon come when I can approach my feckless managers and say, "Take this porta-filter and...."
Regards

In advance of actual anniversaries of birth, I wish a Happy Birthday to my friends Peter and Drew!
And Drew, thank you for sharing a bit of your story with us here. May 2012 be a truly excellent year for you. I wish the same for Peter.
Oh, and Bruce, what about the rest of the clown? Or did he show us sans that portion of his anatomy? _________________ Be well,

It's not Sally's birthday, either. (I think that may be on the 4th.) _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Hi Bob,
He came to the pre-party planning session looking like this:
I just couldn't inflict him on all the kids at the party. So when I fired his ass, his nose, being loyal to him for Heaven knows what reason, left too, so the rest naturally followed. He got a ride from his buds and I haven't his sorry ass or nose since.

Oh I am right there with you. In a different thread I mentioned working the kitchen at a tea house. Attached to the tea house (and with the same owner) was a coffee shop that only served "plain" coffee, and cookies. The owner went on vacation and left me in charge - which meant running the coffee counter.
Guy pulled up in a sports car to the door (rather than parking in a spot), walked in and flung his travel mug at me, declaring "gimme a half-caf latte." When informed we didn't make such an animal, he stalked out of the store with a sneer and eye roll. I was this close to flinging a snickerdoodle at him - and would have if I could've gotten the bakery case open fast enough.
May your TTJ&SI moment come swiftly! _________________ Kendra Hoffman

Never heard it called that before. Next time some a--hole cuts me off in traffic, I'm going to fling him a snickerdoodle! _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Happy un-birthday Drew! I'll have a caffe latte with hazelnut syrup, but not to much to make it oversweet and nothing with aspartame, and the milk warmed to the certain temperature that's not too hot to burn my throat caz u see I'm a professional VO artist, so u'd better make that 3/4 cup instead of a full one and can I get some cake as well. And can I pay after I eat and drink everything, and if it's not good can I get a re-take on that drink b4 I pay you in about 60 days or so?
Seriously tho, I have multiple streams of income as well. Maybe you can think of this gig as a good way to study voices, whilst keeping the wolf from the door! It'll all work out right in the end. _________________ Intuit and do it!

There's wa-a-a-ay too much of this crap going on, and it's not necessarily limited to the types Drew had to deal with. Their caffeine intake doesn't seem to have woken these ubiquitous societal ulcers up to the fact that it could take very little these days* to strip them of their material crutches and return them to reality.

Oh, me, too. "Excuse me... you're not addressing me, are you? We don't keep things on pedestals in here. They're outside and appropriately anointed with pigeon droppings."
*It's unfortunate and scary but, given our dependency on electronics, a large-scale power outage would do it. _________________ Mike
