Yes, there are plenty of producers and store owners who will use "acceptable" voices and pay abysmal rates. And I think they usually get what they pay for. I'm reminded of the bit: Imagine being an astronaut on the launch pad, and think about sitting in a rocket made of thousands of parts, everyone of them made by the lowest bidder. (Sadly, that's become a little to true sounding in recent years.)
Anyway, yes there's cheap work and cheap talent, but there's also a ton of good and great paying work out there and talent who rise up to take it. I get bid requests all the time through my website and I bid jobs at a professional rate. Often I never hear back from people, but more often I have people who say "let's do it", and come back again and again. (I like those people.)
And going union is definitely a decision you can make later in your career.

I wonder why a voice coach would be so negative during lesson 1. It's right and proper to be realistic but may be she was being that negative for a reason.
"Will you go out with me tonight Jenny?"
"I'm washing my hair".
Something to think about. |

Unfortunately I think her "negative" attitude or comments are getting a little blown out of proportion here. I wouldn't say she was negative. I think it was more a reality check. She said I definitely had a good voice for VO and with some practice with layering inflections, I'd have no problem. But, I am under the impression that she is an artist that relies mostly on her agents to get her parts and because of that, isn't getting as many as she used to. And because she's union, she's just assuming that if I'm serious about it, that I'll want to be union too so that I will make the most money per spot. She really did seem to have a lot of knowledge and wonderful suggestions. Sorry if I made it sound like she had a chip on her shoulder or something. |

PAH!! 4 a month? I thought I was lazy!
This month so far as at 19th June 2006
16 radio commercials, although I don't actively market myself for radio ad's
4 TV commercials
10 corporate videos/DVDs
2 elearning projects
32 TV promotions/trailers
This afternoon I went on strike and baked 3 steak and mushrooms pies. Could've made 4 but the market for union pies is not what is used to be. Anyone know any good pie agents? |

Holy crap, Banksey! And I thought I was doing good when I booked six gigs in one week this month. Excuse while I go mop up my ego. It's in a puddle by the toilet... _________________ Tom Dheere - The "H" is Silent, but I'm Not!

Pure luck really. I'm the only voice over in Portgordon so have things all sewn up. There is another MVO 3 miles away in Clochan but he's no competition, he's finding it very hard to market himself whilst locked on my cellar |

I'm working on my accent and moving just down the beach from you. I would fit right in around Portgordon..... _________________ Ben
