|
|
Hello, I'm a studying Chicago VO talent and am interested in getting a relatively inexpensive mic to start experimenting VO with for use with my MacBook (basic) laptop.
Of course I'm finding a ton of deals on mics on Ebay, but I'm sure not all of them are ideal for voiceover.
I've heard that Blue brand microphones are a good choice for a $100 or so value microphone to use for VO.
I'm also coming across names like Samson, MXL and CAD.
I think I've gotten my point across. Suggestions? I'd like to stick to Ebay and find a bit of a deal.
Thanks! _________________ - Jack |

Short answer, AT2020USB for $100 used (or less).
Perfect way to start... _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

How about an AT2035?
You'll need phantom power and a super-quiet recording environment, but for the money it's an AWESOME mike. You can find them new for about $150 and used for less than $100. _________________ Scott R. Pollak

Look at the new MXL Tempo for around $60.00. It is a USB mic, I have one on order to play with, but I understand it is not a bad sounding mic for VO.
Once you become established it might be a good idea to invest in a good preamp and better microphone.

... and then another, and then another, and then...
My first USB mic was a Samson CO1U, which while not wonderful, was a definite step in the right direction. If I was looking for a current equivalent, I'd probably be tempted by one of the MXL offerings. I know there's a lot of love for the AT range, but they always make me sound a little "brittle & breathy". _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Maybe picking mics is like picking a good wine. Start simple and basic...then move up and on as you learn more.
I trust Georges advice. All of the studios that I've worked with that he's built or tuned...including mine....sound as they should. _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

i'll agree on the AT2020 (i still use mine in my travel rig) or AT2035 + micport pro --- a little extra money for the M over a straight USB mic - but you'll always be able to use it - whatever mic you upgrade to. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Unless you are a techy person, you gotta keep it simple, that's why I recommend a USB mic. Yes the 2035 is a little smoother, agreed, but the 2020 is quite good. Want a step up then go to the Shure PG42USB, which I think is as good as the 2035 but with USB and headphone monitoring built in.
MXL makes some good stuff here n there, but those listed are the ones I have the most experience with. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I can't personally vouch for it since I've never owned it, but every sound sample I've heard of the MXL usb.009 sounded really good....best USB mic I've heard. It's a little salty, but it's a nice, simple, minimalistic plug and play device to get you rolling. |

My 1st beginner mic...
I kid you not. I auditioned for a part with Everlasting Films using this type of video/mic. I think I recorded under a blanket. Got the part... got the check (Bought a hamburger with the check.) ... don't use the mic anymore. _________________ "Bailey"
