Hey!
I have a Netgear Router that has never caused me any problems.

Today it seems to want to mess with me & just disconnect me from the 'Net.
If I unplug it & plug it in again it works for a few hours & then just decides it's tired and knocks me off again.

Any suggestions?
Do routers crap out?
Why would it work again when re-booted?

ugh.

Has anything changed recently?...
router location?
computer location?
new electronics nearby?

Have you rebooted the computer?
Does Netgear drop you if you have a direct connection?
You may need to upgrade to an "N" router.

Are you cable or DSL?

Hey Jim!

Has anything changed recently? - Nope
router location? - Same
computer location? - Same
new electronics nearby? - Nope

Have you rebooted the computer? - No, but I had turned off the computer over the weekend and it seems the problem started when I turned it on again...maybe...I actually haven't been online much till today (amazing, I know!! Wink )

Does Netgear drop you if you have a direct connection? - Not sure what you mean.
The Router is connected to the Cable Modem and I am actually connected directly to the Router via an Ethernet cable. I installed it about 3 years ago to have wireless for our laptops.

You may need to upgrade to an "N" router. - which is....?

Are you cable or DSL? Cable.

Is the Netgear Router operating on one of these networks...

802.11
802.11a
802.11b
802.11g
802.11n

The N version has the fastest speeds... 100Mbps

If your router is an older a, b, or g model, that may be why your being dropped. Upgrading to a current N model is doable $ wise.

Generally for my clients that I keep afloat with tech assistance, here's what I recommend.

Give the cable company a call and get a wireless modem. You can ditch the router as it would become redundant and you'll have one less chunk of gear and wall wart.

Their first level of tech support may not know what's going on, tell them you've tried everything and the light just won't light up. That kicks it up to replacement. Then request a wireless unit. Or if your company is friendly, (Fairpoint is not) they will be happy to upgrade your present unit.

The new modem will be wireless and more than likely also have a couple of ethernet ports in the back to connect a switch/hub if needed.

A couple of thoughts for you:

1. Make sure that the drop occurs on all connected computers. Sometimes the culprit is the computer itself, but if you try on a different computer the connection is still good. If that's the case, there are some things you can try, but I won't go into that unless you post back and confirm that this is the case.

2. Occasionally you need to upgrade firmware or software or drivers for fixes (and new features). The firmware is the software that is installed on the router itself that controls its hardware functions. They come out with bug fixes and improvements periodically and if you haven't upgraded it since you bought it and you're having issues, it's a good idea to do so. Refer to your manual or go to the Netgear website's support section for instructions. Here is a link that might help: http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread.php?t=63234

Hey Liz!

Have you bought any new 2.4 GHz phone or anything else?

If so, then it could cause you that problem Smile
