Glad I could give you a chuckle, Frank. And you doing this a long time is a darned good reason for me to try to hear what the heck you are talking about.
Thanks for your comments about the Sterling mic! Nobody else that I have mentioned it to seems to have known anything about the mic or the company. Sounds like if I ever do want to part with it, I'll have a wider potential buying audience than just voiceover people.
I have the simplest of setups - my preamp right now is an Apogee One and I also have a MicPort Pro. I gather that both of those are pretty clean, but goodness knows I chose them primarily for the simplicity and price. I find the thought of getting a "real" preamp rather daunting and will only cross that bridge when I need to - no doubt with a lot of advice sought from these parts. _________________ jen@jengosnell.com

Up until recently I had a small mic closet with about 1,000 microphones.
I will rebuild.
Both the Apogee and M add some color; although I like both; and are a bit underpowered as are most USB pre's without an external power supply (wall wart). Combo devices (sound card/pre-amps) draw more power than USB ports are able to provide -- even with USB 3.0. The choices are daunting for pre-amps, but can be narrowed down easily by the choice of microphone and sound card connections.
Separate devices allow more control over the sound and often more clarity, less color, and more body without sacrificing quality or power.
When the time cones to chose a pre-amp and sound input device - ask questions here first and get the product in your studio to play with before buying. As you stated, there are a lot of informed folks on the VO-BB who can help.
