i'm experimenting with settings for a client. without getting bogged down in details .... i have files recorded at standard 44,1 -- mono -- 16 bit that i then normalize using vox studio. when i select 16-bit linear for sound type and 44,1 frequency with windows wave format, and then normalize, it's hissy,
and even more so when i convert to the client's desired end specs (22050Hz, 16-bit, mono). if i convert to 8-bit linear, it's not nearly as hissy. final product is used for on-line learning.

question: is there a problem with that? to reduce the bit rate ... ?

please tell me no so i can format my HUGE script and make it a lot easier for edit purposes.

fingers crossed, and rejoicing in advance for your input, thanks.

Diane, I'm not familiar with Vox Studio, but you shouldn't be getting any noise when you normalize - unless your initial record level is so far down you're bringing up your noise floor.

If you'd like, send me a screenshot of the dialogue box that you use when you normalize. Maybe there's a setting in there being overlooked.

I record my v/o at 32-bit, 44.1 (or 48k) for everything, then for one on-hold customer, I have to drop it to 16-bit 11k. Outside of the fidelity loss, there's no issue. Normally when you go to 8-bit, you start getting that annoying ringing on everything, but I've not ever heard of it happening after only normalizing with no bit/sample rate change.

yes, the recording is wicked low. you may know the CEntrance mic port pro has only so much gain, and i can't boost through vox studio. what's strange is the hiss is evident at 16-bit but not at 8-bit.

@george--so faffy to meet you, too! i look forward to seeing you again, soon! and i have the privelege (privelege in that you be a guru) of telling you your link tells me the page can't be found Gasp

also, f2 rang me with details so i owe him a phone call back. after my master training session (no, not vo but get-pumped-uHobo Happy i'll re-commence the investigation ...
