This, of course, is a question for those not already living the dream... Wink

What is it?

My dream? Imaging work. Not just voicing, but producing it as well. I'm not there yet (although I am voicing two stations now). It's the most exciting to me.

I think I would love to try my hand at documentary narrations too. "Notice the mother turtle gently packing sand around her newly laid eggs before she heads back into the cold dark depths of the sea."

I've discovered I really dislike the tedium of phone work. Repetitive, sounds awful, drives me nuts. God bless those of you that do it often.

Being a voice over is such a great way to make a living and I make no secret of the fact that I count my blessings every day.

The old saying that there are no small parts only small actors is true. I say yes to almost everything, if I don't have time to do a job I make time and I never miss the opportunity to pass work to other voice artists.

The jobs I do that are a trial are character building as are the clients, producers and directors who fall into that category.

No matter how high you climb the ladder of success there are always more rungs. What next for me? No idea, but it's going to be fun finding out.

I love doing everything! I think that's one of the most appealing aspects of being in the VO business for me: the diversity. If you held a gun to my head, I'd say I enjoy recording the educational stuff the most. I always learn something, there's no demand for cheese (hard sell, over the top, in your face ,etc.) and the sessions are always fun & relaxed.

I'll have to second the "love everything" thought.

Right now I'm primarily doing radio and TV spot work, radio and TV imaging is a sector that I need to move into more.

The big goal? Do this full time...just about time to make the jump now.

I think I'm best suited for character animation at this point. I'm soon going to be involved with a budding internet radio station and am making arrangements to do their imaging, so that will be fun, too. To me, imaging is all about how you put the bits together like a puzzle.

My DREAM is to be in Phillip's position and be able to not say NO to anything, but I have a lot of work to do on industrial/narration/everyman acting.

I have the great good fortune to have 2 wage-paging jobs in the biz-- radio traffic reporter for one group and staff announcer for another. Keeps the kinks out of the cash flow.
I love doing radio station imaging vox!
I'm concentrating on gaining the skills necessary to make a dent in animation VO-- my dream is to capture some major characters in video games.

I'll agree..the radio gig is nice for consistancy..the commute to Boston gets old though. Deeb..how often do you have to come into town?

Facing losing my safety net of the day job and with no current prospects in market I suppose I need to quit dreaming and start working on the dream.

Imaging: Every DJ wannabe with a computer thinks he/she can do it. Fortunately for me I'm better than 90% of them at the production side. Still working on getting up to that level on the voice side.

I thought of another one driving around today. There are certain infomercials I would love to do. Call me weird but I think some of the cheesy ones would be a blast to do.

The big problem with imaging is that there are alot of kids willing to do it for peanuts. Back when Ann Dewig was still voicing the station I image/voice for..we used to sell our "used" production to other stations out of the market. Medium market rates at that point were about $40 for a bump..$100 for a promo...that's just the prod..no voicework. Now with stuff like Vanilla Gorilla and and surplus of downsized radio folk, the rates are in the basement for prod gigs. Strange that in this day and age, with so much emphasis on imaging...especially on the "jack" formatted stations, radio production folks are still tremendiously under-valued/under paid.
