What's with FaceBooK? I go there quite infrequently. I do get messages (through an FB aHobo Tounge) on my smart phone that someone has added me to a group. At least a half dozen such messages in the last 2 weeks. I thought one had to "join" a group not be added without permission. That's just not right. I don't like it and am considering canceling my FB account.

Somewhere along the way, the nice folks who created Facebook were replaced by their counterparts from the Bizarro World. Since then, every "improvement" they have made has been ass-backward.

You used to be able to include a message with a friend request (quite handy when friending someone who may need a reminder of who you are and why you want to be friends); they eliminated that. The used to have your school and your year of graduation connected (pretty useful when trying to find old classmates); disconnected them.

And you used to have to request membership in or be invited to join a group and then be approved by the group administrators (if the group did not automatically accept all comers); now you can be added to a group without ever expressing any interest in joining. The good news is, you can easily undo that process by simply finding the button that says "Leave the Group." But you really shouldn't have to bother. Joining a group should be your own decision, not someone else's.

I remember when this came up some time ago. There was a lot of outrage in the tech community about how this affected people in a society where there is a high degree of "guilt by association" ... the meme at the time was quoting the dangers of singing someone up for "the man-boy love society of America" (or something equally exceptionable). I thought the issue had gone away, but recently I seem to have been added to a couple of groups without requesting it... and just how many VO relevant groups are there? Seems like one more every week!

To paraphrase slightly... "I wouldn’t want to belong to any Facebook group that would ask me to be a member" Wink

Cheers
Peter

Apparently there is a function out there that, if someone is not careful and doesn't read the box they're clicking, will add people in your address book to a group when you click "like" or something. I noticed some discussion about this the other day. I've had to remove myself from a couple of groups when added by people who didn't have a clue.

...just removed myself from one. seemed absoutely idiotic for someone feeling as isolated and alone as i've been lately, but i just would like it to be my choice to join or not to join.

Yeah, you can be added to any group, any time and be inundated with all the WOO HOOs of all the members until you go to that group's page and chose NO notifications and NO emails.

You also get all manner of crap from every FB "Friend" unless you go to each person's page and change the settings to what you like to see in your news feed.
There are NO GLOBAL SETTINGS. Stinks.
Thanks for the free service.

I voted with my click to exit Facetube several months ago and am able to report that I miss it about as much as I miss my exploding fresh fruit collection which was ok to begin with but eventually went off.

Happily ALL my 148 Facetube friends keep in touch using Zen email which allows me to believe I recieve updates from them.

My joining FB was a way for me to keep in touch with family.

I was faced with an onslaught of Facebook-generated emails today. It took me a bit to figure out that I had been added to a group against my will and, by default, new members get automatically bombarded with every (inexplicable) "Thank you for adding me to this awesome group!" message... until you drop everything and try to find a way to make it stop.

This has to be the most irritating and nonsensical Facebook misfeature ever. I searched the help files to learn what I needed to do to prevent this from happening to me ever again, only to find that you still can't prevent it and got the ever-so-helpful tip that "only friends can add you to a group," as if that made it better somehow.

So I left the group and unfriended person who added me to it, even though she is probably otherwise lovely.

Sounds like it is time for me to un-FaceBook or pull the plug on it. All this social media is getting crazy. I don't have time for it and I don't see it benefiting my business so I don't have a need for it professionally.

I could set up personal FB account with my real name just for family and real friends. I use a stage name for VO (did for radio) since my real name is a jumble of Scandinavian consonants that I am always having to spell for people at least 3 times.

I'll think it over for a few days.

I'm not leaving. Through Facebook, I've reconnected with so many people, and I stay connected to so many more. Despite the many drawbacks, I love the fact that I can easily find and communicate with "everyone" in one place.

For example, today--thanks to Facebook, a bunch of high school theater friends are planning a get together in my home town, and I'm helping an elementary school chum with a television commercial for her awesome new company.

Every time I'm frustrated enough to even consider leaving, I consider all the advantages to staying then sigh and carry on. And I hate it when people leave Facebook. I find it inconvenient and unfun. So, please don't. And if you already have, then come back. Sticking out Tongue
