Hi everyone!

I was so excited to finally install Source Connect Standard 3.6 (standalone for Mac). I followed all the instructions, but think I must have missed something because when I try to start the program the splash screen just looks at me and I get the rainbow wheel of death. That's as far as it gets (I eventually just have to Force Quit). I've uninstalled and reinstalled 2 or 3 times now, rebooted, checked my router and network connections...nothing. Anyone run into this before? Should I try the next version down?

Thanks in advance!
Fran

EDIT: I have the 15 day trial version if that makes any difference

Ok...narrowed down my problem. It only freezes when I have a USB mic plugged into my laptop. As soon as I unplug that, it comes up just fine. I have a non-USB mic as well, so shouldn't be a huge issue (until I'm on the road), but the question is...why??? I'm sure it has to be a setting or something...so very, very weird

Sounds like a question for George. As far as SC on the road, don't plan on using it on hotel wifi...not enough bandwidth.

Have you tried firing up SC...and then plugging in the usb mic?

If you want to test, give me a call.

Yep...contacting George was actually the first thing I thought of, but then figured I'd post here quick first to see if someone had run into it or if it was just a setting issue or something. I will try getting in touch with George tonight. I did try starting SC and then plugging in the USB mic and as soon as it's plugged back in, it freezes right up again (runs fine until then). I went to the iLok site to download the client and update the iLok drivers just in case...no change though Frown

Once I have everything sorted out, I may take you up on that offer to test Smile

Just an observation probably not worth 2 cents to most.

I really believe that the Pod Cast folks have it over most VOIP system like Source Connect.

The bandwidth needed to support SC and the technical glitches it and other software have are more problem than they are worth in my estimation.

Just do the Double Ender. Use Skype to connect talent to studio. The audio is great and the studio/director can give good notes to talent in progress.

The studio records the Skype audio the talent records on there end, each saves their respective recording.

Talent converts the WAV. File to MP2 level 2 and transfers via FTP to the studio. Talent e-mails the studio letting them know what the file size sent was.

I produce a weekly radio program that airs on a local NPR station. I convert the Wave file to MP2 then put it into a Wave Wrapper so their computer can directly take in the audio I deliver by way of FTP.

There are many converters on the market, I use one recommended by PRSS (Public Radio Satellite Service) AWave is the name it’s PC only. I could pay $400.00 plus for SC or $49.00 for AWave. When it comes to sound quality I look to NPR, BBC, ORTF and DW for guidance. Self proclaimed gurus most likely have not done the research these folks have done.

But then “Old dogs and new tricks” seem like the few who do production are lead by the fewer that don’t embrace new methods.

(For the record, I have had ISDN, fiddled with Source Connect and used Skype to record sessions)

Thanks for the info, Ed! I'm going to look into all of my options to see which will work best for me. It's a steep learning curve for me, that's for sure! Smile

Good luck with it. I wish you well with SC

Your USB mic seems to be the culprit..

I would first look at the Mac's "Sound" preferences.. how does the Mac recognize the mic? Try unplugging and pluggin in to understand how the device is being routed. Source Connect's Audio Options will default to "System Audio" - so the USB Mic needs to be the input under your "Sound" preferences.

You may need to open up Audio MIDI setup in Utilities and configure an aggregate. It sounds like a conflict with what Source Connect and your Mac considers the "system audio" to be, an aggregate may allow you to recognize multiple devices.

And FWIW, I've successfully used SC over hotel WIFI. I think it was at the North Conway Grand in New Hampshire... took awhile for SC to log in, but once I did it somehow went smoothly.

Fran - you're running the a compatible Mac OS version? I'm running Source Connect on 10.6.8 - but I remember I had to upgrade because of a compatibility issue.

I've got 10.6.8 as well. The device seems to be recognized just fine (as an input device). For the aggregate, do I just put the AT2020 in there, or also add the Built-in Input or Internal Mic? Do I need to reboot after changing that?

Thanks again for your help!

Just the AT2020. But you said SC works OK with your non-USB mic - do you see anything with the USB mic plugged in? (Don't launch Source Connect yet.. first poke around to see what's up.)

Also, before you go to Audio Midi Setup - first are you able to select the USB mic under "Select a Device for Sound Input" under "Sound" in System Preferences?

You shouldn't need to reboot after making audio config changes, just restart software. Generally good to quit all audio software (including iTunes) when changing your Mac OS sound inputs and outputs.

Yep...I work with the USB mic on here all the time...never have a problem with it. It just seems that it doesn't play well with SC Frown

---> Also, before you go to Audio Midi Setup - first are you able to select the USB mic under "Select a Device for Sound Input" under "Sound" in System Preferences?

Yep...shows up just fine there and I'm able to select it

Well I'm at a loss.

Source Connect won't even launch when the USB mic is your input? Seems like you're doing everything right.

Stumped here, too! Did you contact SC yet? I know you didn't buy it, but they are pretty darn helpful. Rebekah the head developer may know a secret about your particular configuration...
