One of the things I've been struggling with is getting clean recordings. I started out in my living room and while the room isn't so bad the kids and general house noise made it hard. Waiting until everyone was in bed made it easier, but then I found out how loud the fan in my MacBook (a '07 black book) was under Lion. Under Leopard I pretty much had be calculating the factorial of the national debt to get the fan to run, under Lion it runs at the first mouse click it. When it runs, the M3 picks it up, and it's a problem.
But, using a powered hub I connected my Shure x2u to the iPad, and TwistedWave records just great. Then I send the file to dropbox and I can pull it down and edit using the MacBook if necessary. No fans in the recording, nice and quiet.
Well, almost. Now I have to fix the sound of the room _________________ Steve Duncan

The fan is running a lot more than likely because Lion uses a LOT more memory, so it's caching to disk a lot to keep up. If you upgrade your memory to the max (probably only 3GB on that machine), it could really help.
Kool to know that the X2u works on the iPad with a powered hub! _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I've thought of upgrading, I'd have to buy 4gig to get three, and I keep thinking I'll just get a new computer.
But, I'm finding the iPad to be pretty capable on its own. Using dropbox I can edit files on either machine. The iPad version is missing some features, but nothing I can't live without for the stuff I'm doing. It's also easier to haul downstairs. _________________ Steve Duncan

The iOS version of TW will only get better. When it can do Stacks, it's really gonna be awesome! You can put a 1GB and a 2GB stick in Macbook, will cost about $50, totally worth it. And if you want it to feel like a brand new computer, swap the hard drive for an SSD... WOW. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Here is proof that it will work, Jeff. Just make sure you use the right battery. I think any powered hub of quality like Belkin should do it for you. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I'm just using an old dynex hub with the wall wart. However, looks like I could use a 5v battery if I wanted to make a cable. For my purposes I don't need portability for the X2u.
A possibility is to get a y cable and one of those USB battery packs. That would be easy and portable.
I have to thank George for harping on TW - I was using reaper, but TW is easier once I get used to it. _________________ Steve Duncan
