I am in the process of moving to a different house and am going to need to purchase a booth, most likely a Whisper Room. I am thinking of the 4x4, MDL4848E which is double-walled. I am told this size can sound a little "boxy" since it is a square shape. Does anyone else have this size of booth and what is your experience? Do you use bass traps? Is a more rectangular shaped booth like a 3.5x5 better? Looking for any type of feedback from those who use Whisper Rooms before I plunk down the cash.
Thanks!

Glenn, if you go here you can hear a U87ai
recorded in my 4X4 Whisper Room, which is covered pretty
much floor to ceiling in 4-inch OC 703 and 705 panels.
If you go here you can hear the Sennheiser 416 in the same booth.
I'm pretty happy with mine, but of course YMMV. |

Hi Glen,
I have the 5 by 7 Whisperroom and it was boxy until I did the same as Rob and pretty much covered everything, walls and ceiling, with panels.

And Glenn, you have determined you need a whisper room type arrangement because of outside noise coming in to your home? If so, that's one of the better reasons for such an investment. If not, and you just need to deaden the sound reflections in your recording space there are many much cheaper methods of creating a workable space, many that picky landlords will never know you had set up.

+1 for what Bruce said.
The only reason I got one is because I had to do something fast to address an issue of the walls not going all the way up to the ceiling. It's a log house and there's a gap the width of a log where the wall and ceiling would normally join. At the time we moved, I couldn't afford any down time. Otherwise, I would have built a room within a room instead. _________________ John Weeks Voice Overs

Thanks for the info guys. I am still doing my research and I appreciate your input. I do find that I need a booth. I am moving from a house with a small, rectangular walk-in closet that sounds surprisingly good and very quiet. Audio engineers think it is a booth. The house I am moving in to has only one small walk-in closet that is not going to work. My kids are pretty loud so I do need to keep as much outside noise out as possible in the room I will be in.

So you're thinking that the big open bowl of candy and the promise of "you'll get your own ponies to ride if you're really quiet while Daddy's working" scheme may not work, eh? Sure, there'll be dental and manure maintenance expenses, but those booths are quite pricey.

I have the 3.5x5 with the extension on top (makes it 8.5' tall). I recommend the extension not only for mental space, but I believe it sounds less boxy. The most important element for me was adding 2 large bass traps in the top front and back corners..and I have the paneled traps in every other corner. Not every inch is covered in foam, but most is.
Side note- I recently moved to an apartment downtown and I was terrified of the train, city bells, neighbors, etc that are really noisy. Nothing, not one thing has interfered with my recording. I've even had it checked by more than one picky engineer...and I've gotten only thumbs up! So, I also recommend double walls for sure. Craigslist is a great place to check. _________________ Threadjackers local 420

Glenn, you're welcome to come look at mine. GK Acoustics booth. Love it. Never have had any issues after I went with yet another Genus recommendation many years ago. Get the additional layer of heavy load vinyl in it. It makes a difference. _________________ Ben

Thanks, Ben. I would take you up on that but before I read your post I went ahead and purchased the 4x4 Whisper Room today. I am going to go with the panels from ATS Acoustics in it that Rob Ellis has as opposed to puting Auralex all over. I got the Enhanced model since the kids are loud. We'll see how it works out and if it can stand up to my closet and talking into my shirts which has worked very well. Thanks though, and thanks for the helpful comments everyone. |
