Hey iPhone owners.... I'm thinking of jumping into the second decade of this century and finally buying a smart phone. I'm a Mac person so the iPhone seems to make sense a little more than an Android despite the good things I've heard about them.

Do I want the 4, the 4S, or the 4LGTE? Or wait for the 5 at the end of September (maybe)?

I've been OK with a "dumb" phone in that I'm not out of the studio much, but I worry about missing important emails when I am on the road. I can't imagine using a lot of aHobo Tounges or using huge amounts of data transfer.

Lastly, I'd like to kill the land line but I get terrible cell reception in my studio. Any experience out there with signal boosters?

Many thanks for your insights!

B

Can't help you with the iPhone, Bruce, cuz I'm in the same boat.

But I can tell you you might consider keeping the copper land-line. Cell communication is not immune to power outages. Obviously your phone will be good only until the charge runs out. And, unless the local cell carriers have installed generators at each of their tower sites, they won't be working either.

A friend told me that when Verizon installed FiOS at his place, they told him to keep the copper land-line because it'll be the only thing that will still work in an emergency situation.

Until you see what's available and start playing with them.

Bruce,

I'm an Apple fan-boy but only jumped into the smart-phone arena last Christmas with an iPhone 4s. I love it, but the only thing I would warn you about is getting the 4s because of Siri. It's great, but apart from using it to mess around with, I've never used it for a "real" reason. Don't let the Siri factor be the make/break on a 4/4s. That being said, I love the 4s for lots of other reasons as well (good camera etc.) and am happy with the purchase.

The iPhone 5 may be worth waiting for... or at least it may be worth waiting for the announcement to see if it looks like it's worth waiting for (if you see what I mean).

Land line problem: I had the same issue. I needed to separate house phone and business phone but my basement reception on t-Mobile was crap (prior to my AT&T iPhone, which is better). Using my mobile in the studio was a non-starter. I purchased an Obihai voip box from Amazon and hung it onto my home router. I then subscribed to Google Voice and had the number routed to both my mobile and Obihai box. The Obihai is supported by Google Voice and they have well documented set-up procedures and support. This is the base model... which works well.

Obihai OBi100

So, now I have one number that rings a regular phone in the studio AND my mobile at the same time. Depending on where I am, I can pick up on either. Apart from the $40 for the Obihai, there are no costs associated with this, and I have one uniform number that will stay with me wherever I go, and no need to ever have a regular land-line again.

Ditto on the Siri factor, but it can be helpful when you're driving.

I use the talk-to-text function ALL THE TIME.

One great reason to wait for the 5 is the price of the 4/4S. Right now, you can get a 3GS for free (I wouldn't get that one) and you can probably expect the price drop when the 5 comes out (as Apple's prices are pretty darn predictable).

Ive had a 4 since they came out, tried the android route for a few months and hated how poorly everything worked together, and it is about as perfect as a smartphone gets (apart from some quirky apple things that haven't mattered much to me).

the new iphone 5 will have supposedly a smaller dock connector if you're planning on a 5, don't invest in any fancy speaker/docks or other expensive peripherals, unless you want to be bound to a cumbersome adapter.

this also means that the vaunted Apogee iMic won't work with the 5 unless you're got the bulky adapter.

Me three on the i-phone quest-- In lieu of Siri on the 4S, has anyone tried Dragon voice recognition for texting with the the 4--seems to get good marks?

And what about protection of the screen/phone? What kind of screen protectors do people like? What about cases? Spare batteries/chargers?

If you haven't got one yet, then definitely wait a bit for the 5. I've had an iPhone for 3 years and love it! The 4S is great, though I wish they'd brought out the 5 last year Cry

You may not think much of aHobo Tounges now, but wait till you get the phone and see them!

After some ten years on the Blackberry bandwagon I decided to make the switch, and I bought my first iPhone (a 4s) last Fall. I love it, especially the way it syncs its address book, calendar, and docs with my Macbook Pro and iPad. I've never used Siri, but I have to have it turned on to activate the voice to text function (which works surprisingly well).

Data: I spend most of my day in my studio with WiFi, so the only time I even turn on the Cellphone data is when I leave the house. I make it through a month with less than 200 mb of data, but when AT&T starts their bucket plan I'll go with that, allowing all 5 users on my family plan to share.

I've read some about the upcoming iPhone 5, but haven't heard anything that floats my boat particularly.

same same. also thinking about what to get next, though i was eligible for a new phone back on jun 23! considering the iPhone (even though it seems like everyone has it and i don't like that! but i know so many have it because it's such a good phone. i get it.)

is anyone considering delaying their purchase until after august 8, what with mercury retrograde? seriously .... or, i guess a better question is, when is the iPhone 5 hitting the market? i'll bet apple is waiting until post-m.r. !

I will not bore you with the details of my numerous trips to the Verizon store to get an upgrade to my super little Samsung Fascinate that simply needed a software update - which was no longer made - so I had to upgrade to a newer phone.

Being the cheapskate I am, I opted (initially) not to spend an extra $150 to upgrade to the latest 4G Samsung Galaxy III - and instead ended up with 2 other phones - 3 times due to malfunctioning hardware.

After (wait, this seems like the details) living with the LG for a day, I decided that it was too slow and the camera was awful...so back I went and told them I was willing to pay the extra $100 AND the restocking fee to do so.

They told me NO!!! Because their policy said that you only got to bring your phone back one time to exchange it for another. After going through 2 managers, I was finally allowed to pay for the Galaxy III - with that last manager practically foaming at the mouth telling me that he would never do this for anyone else ever again.

It was like the heavens opened and harp music started the moment I left the store.

I LOVE this phone.

Of course, in two years when they won't be doing software updates for this one I'll be in the same indecision - need to try it before I buy it sort of place again. Grrrr.

I got the 4s about a month ago and AT&T was "doing deals" in advance of the 5 being released. I like it, not so sure about Siri, but then I didn't buy it to get Siri. I bought it to test aHobo Tounges for a client I'm doing writing and VO for...
