|
|
Yesterday I had a potential client reply to an audition and ask me (among a few other things) to confirm if I could do phone patch w/ playback. For me, phone patch = Skype, and getting Skype and my audio software to share the mic is a breeze...but playback as well? So far (oddly enough) no client had asked for that, and I wasn't sure how to pull it off.
Dug around online a bit (including here), but all recommended roads led through External Mixerville, and I live in square in the middle of AudioInterface Onlytown. However, one thread reminded me of a little utility called Jack that I had struggled to understand many moons ago. Took it for another spin, and managed to cracked the code, so I put together a blog post to share my findings.
Don't know Jack about sending audio to Skype?
As a bonus, I also learned how to record both sides of a Skype convo with only a few extra clicks. Now that I know Jack, methinks I'll be enlisting his services a lot more! _________________ Justin S. Barrett

Hey Justin - Thanks SO much for this.
Since I have the same audio configuration (I love simplicity) this will be a perfect tool for me too.
I just saved your blog to my favorites folder so that I can really read through it when the sandman isn't calling my name so loudly. |

Thanks, Justin! Great new info. Currently, I do a DIY fix where I take one of my headphone feeds and send it back into my interface (of course, killing everything else first). However, my reaction for playback requests is usually "It'll be much quicker for you if I just redo that or give you a pick-up" because it's usually Marketing Guy #6 on the speakerphone who asks "Um, did you say forty or fourteen back on the third paragraph on page 9?" _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Had a similar experience last week..(blips & hiccups)...I'm no computer whiz, so I just run Skype off of my laptop, and record audio to my main
computer.. |

Thanks, guys.
Steve: If I had a second machine, I might go that route, though I still prefer to keep all the audio in the same machine rather than introduce more wires (i.e. more potential noise, connection issues, etc). _________________ Justin S. Barrett

A tip for those with Windows that has all their interwebz and audio kit on the same computer: use a anti-virus program that has a "Game Mode" that you can switch to easily when you record. Game Mode makes the anti-virus program run in a lower gear and allows better operation of running programs. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Great suggestion. Now, after playing around with Jack you find that you STILL don't know Jack about Jack, there's an ancient piece of software called VAC (Virtual Audio Cable) you might wanna check out.
No endorsement from me, though, as Steve I use a seperate laptop. _________________ Regards,

If you're using JACK, grab the program Patchage. With Patchage, you can drag and drop the connections to get pretty complex routing. See below:
