Okay, so now we have yet another new audio file format I need to learn: FLAC.
AA CS5.5 doesn't provide file conversion to FLAC, so I downloaded a FLAC converter to run on Windows, 'cept it ain't working. When I attempted a conversion I got a runtime error.
Anyone have experience with this? Any plug-ins I can get to use with AA 5.5 to convert files to FLAC? Any other options? _________________ Scott R. Pollak

Hi Scott,
I often use Switch for format conversions and it has .flac as one of the options so that might work for you.
You can get a free download here:

The NCH program works well but is a separate program, hence you need to save (preferably as .wav) then convert.
FLAC is not a new format it is simply a free version of .mp4 (audio) connected to Ogg-Vorbis. Like LAME (Lame Ain't an MP3 Encoder) FLAC is not connected to Farunhoffer.
Make sure you put the FLAC encoder in the AA folder. Both the encoder front end and the decoder .dll files need to be placed in the AA program folder. Look in Source Forge for details and other programs to convert to FLAC.

Thanks, Simon. Downloaded Switch and it seems to work. Now I gotta get rid of this stupid NCH toolbar it automatically installed in my Chrome browser. _________________ Scott R. Pollak

Glad it worked for you Scott but sorry to hear about that toolbar. I never had that problem but I downloaded it a long time ago on a different browser. It's a shame that they would spoil a useful program with something intrusive like that. I hope you can get rid of it without too much hassle. |

That be right...however they did implement FLAC into CS6. The upgrade is $75 (which the option to export FLAC is absolutely not worth alone) but some cool features that were added to CS6 are:
Clip grouping, CALM and ITU compatibility plus ITU loudness matching, VST3, side chain support, ability to save effects rack as a favorite, and a whole bunch more export/import options (FLAC, ogg, WMA, avi) |

Does that mean if I rename a FLAC file to have mp4 as its file extension, it would work?
I have a client who wants her files delivered as mp4 and neither of my recording programs saves files in that format. If renaming doesn't work, can anybody recommend a cheap or free program that will convert WAV or mp3 files to mp4. The ones I've seen as a result of a google search seem to want to install tons of bloatware. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

No. Renaming the file to .mp4 will not work as they have different headers (embedded information).
However, Nero has a FREE version of an mp4 (aka: AAC) encoder/decoder which may be used and is designed to work within AA (1, 1.5, 2.0, 3.X). See below links:
http://www.nero.com/eng/downloads-nerodigital-nero-aac-codec.php
or:
http://www.nero.com/enu/technologies-aac-codec.html
or here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/nero_mpeg-4_filter.htm
Since these are .flt files CS 5/6 will probably not be able to use the codec (AA CS5/6 no longer are able to use "filter" .flt files Another reason I am not impressed with CS5/6.
Once installed properly the Nero codec will show up in the "Save As" part of AA.
If you do not mid doing a workaround; I believe Quicktime, Audicity, and Reaper can "Save As" .mp4.

Thanks, Frank. I tried exporting in Audacity 2.0 but didn't see an option for mp4. Based upon your post, I tried selecting "M4A (AAC) Files (FFMpeg),"which was the closest choice. I needed to install what I assume is the mp4 equivalent of the LAME encoder before it would work. What I ended up with was, as expected, an m4a file. Now can I just rename that to mp4, or am I still SOL? _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

M4a is .mp4. The designation for MPEG4 Audio is the proper designator. Your clients software SHOULD be able to read this tag (.m4a) as an .mp4.

Turns out, my client was confused. I asked her if m4a would do and she replied, "I spoke with our programmer and MP3 is fine and actually the preferred format he said. My mistake, please disregard the request for MP4."
But now I have the capability to save files as m4a, should the need arise in the future. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
