I recall reading that one way to do muting had something to do with using a guitar FX foot-pedal and/or an Insert channel on a mixer.

Can anyone demonstrate this?

(BTW I have a mixer with a FX Footswitch, but I am not familiar with it)

found this from George:

Does your preamp or mixer have an insert jack? If so just get a guitar amp effects loop footswitch and insert it one click into the insert jack. Voila, instant mute switch. I have this rigged up for Bill Ratner, works great.

Having difficulty picturing and understanding this. Does anyone have any pictures or diagrams or explanation?

For muting in my booth, I use the Short Stop Momentary Muting Switch. It's on the floor, in my booth, inline between my mic (phantom powered) and my Mackie 1402-VLZ3. (So basically, a short mic cable comes out of the mic, into the Short Stop. Another mic cable comes out of the Short Stop and into my mixer.)

Works beautifully.

Check it here: http://www.procosound.com/cdss

But don't be mislead by the line that says "Noiseless Momentary Microphone Muting Switch." It's only "noiseless" in the sense that it doesn't add any noise to the signal itself. However, the 'click' that the switch makes in the booth when you activate (and release) it, is loud enough to be picked up by your mic, and people on the other end of an ISDN line will hear it.

Yeah, that's one problem with those switches, Doug, and the other is it doesn't actually mute the signal completely, just attenuates it by something like -40dB.

The Mixer Buddy is a better solution, which recently became available. It's slightly overkill, but it's hard to beat the approx $150 price. I had my Dad stop building them by hand recently when I saw this thing.

Plus it will trigger your "Recording" light outside the booth with the help of a relay.

If you dont' use a mixer between your mic and your other equipment, then these solutions won't work as-is. You'll need a little gadget my Dad came up with, basically a Phantom Power supply with the ability to be switched externally to mute a mic. He even has four different impedance settings for best results with your mic!

That settles it. Your dad is a wizard. Smile

I just got the Mixer Buddy yesterday. Amazingly for the price, this thing is made in the USA. Will rig it up and see how it well it works!
Maybe Broadcast Tools might be the kind of company that could build a VO recording specific console, something I've had in the design stages for several years.
