Apparently, in 1976 there wasn't much worry about gating, debreathing, and noise reduction, strip silence... not according to this ad, anyway..

"Breathe, breathe in the air. Don't be afraid to care."

Methinks debreathing has became more popular since it became much easier to do....no more razor blade time.

I remember being required to do 10 or 15 takes of a spot to get it just right (interpretation and length), partially because the engineer didn't want to splice bits together, or the producer didn't want to pay for all that. Now it's two or three takes, a little digital samurai work, and Bob's your uncle.

I don't know, breaths can be beautiful dramatic components when used correctly.

Absolutely. Thank you, Bruce, for echoing the feeling I've had ever since the issue of breath removal began to get out of hand ("Wow! Look what we can do!"). Sure; do it to gain some time in a commercial. But breaths - unless seriously exaggerated by misuse of processing - should never, ever be removed from storytelling, especially stories of a dramatic nature.

Imagine your favorite exciting dramatic or romantic film scene without the sound of breathing. <yawn>

Voice-over intended to be pleasant to listen to should sound natural... not sterile. That is, of course, unless the goal is to induce the listener into hyperventilation.
