but it wasn't an issue last month ...
i have a new client (yay me) who would like to avoid the angst and bewilderment of setting me up as a vendor, and just get the business taken care of (yes, large company). at least initially, he wants to pay by credit card so he can expense the job.
what do you recommend for a card reader/terminal/swiper and service, with low fees, and why? also, any warning you have i'll heed.
many thanks in advance. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

i use square ... 2.75% if you swipe - 3.5% + 15¢ to key their # in.
there's also intuit, paypal --- i think the rates are about the same. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Personally, I just use PayPal invoicing for any credit card invoicing. They don't charge a monthly fee, and I don't get many of these clients (at this point). Their fee is 3% (which is a but higher than other companies), but like I said, no monthly fee. They will also send you a free reader that you can use with an iPhone and their a .
Good solution for me, not necessarily for everyone though. I just like the ease and functionality of PayPal. |

I posed the question a while back, got several useful answers, and ended up going with Square.
I have not had occasion to use their card reader thingy that plugs into your smartphone. I just keyed the necessary information (card #, expiration date, address as it appears on client's bill, & security code from back of card) into the a and -- hey presto -- the money found its way into my bank account, minus about a little over 3% service fee.
The above type of transaction is predicated on the client being willing to provide all the information to you in an e-mail or phone call. To the best of my knowledge, there is no similar per-transaction service that also provides a secure website option for your client to key in his or her own information.
If you need to physically accept cards and are in a hurry, you can buy one of the readers for around 10 bucks at Best Buy or Staples, but Square will mail you one for free. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

+1 in the Google Checkout.... Got mine setup to go straight into my Google Wallet account.... and my phone alerts me when a transaction happens.
Not to mention being able to spend it at retail straight from my phone. _________________ Don Brookshire

I went with Square; although Quicken and even PayPal have a version too (both take CC payments via your Android 3.2 or IOS cell phone). There are several others but these are the simplest and easiest to operate.

Nice job, Doug. I had no idea.
I've totally lost count of the number of times someone has said "What did you just do there?". Even managers walk up just to see it, and they're supposed to know about it, since it's their store. Leaves 'em dumbfounded. _________________ Don Brookshire

I have to vote for Square as well. I used it with a new client last week and she was pleasantly surprised to find an emailed receipt in her inbox literally less than a minute after I processed the card and I had the payment in my account the next morning. Everybody's happy! _________________ "Be grateful, be happy, work a little harder." |

Thanks for the information about Intuit Online Payment Eddie. I am looking at this option hard as I can simply send a link via email to my customers/clients and get paid too!

I tried to use Square with a client over the phone, but it required a signature. Has that requirement gone away, or did I miss something about how to do the transactions? _________________ Kendra Hoffman
