It seems like everyone has just figured out a method that works for them. I use quickbooks for Mac, and have never had a problem. You do need some basic accounting knowledge to use most accounting software, but it is t too tough to learn.

I checked out all the Mac programs, and just liked the interface best. I'm sure they can all do it, but I have a really simple system to track everything I do.

I use QuickBooks PRO.
It does everything I want & need it to do and I've used it for over a decade so I'm familiar with it.

Many here use FreshBooks and love it as well.

In a previous life I became a spreadsheet ninja. I tend to write my own routines for accounting. The advantage is that I can bend the spreadsheet to my will and make changes as and where required.... but I do understand double-entry book-keeping (although I use single)

There are some good packages for those that don't want to roll-their-own, but for most small businesses that have a manageable client list, Todd's method can work quite well. Until you start churning out multiple invoices per day across a base of 100+ clients, I wouldn't worry about it too much... just keep good records and file things accordingly (use two shoe-boxes).

I tried QuickBooks, but found that it did waaaay more than I needed it for. (And yes, I am math-challenged.)

For me, Freshbooks was the answer. Simple. Easy to use, and flexible enough to handle tons of clients, and multiple currencies.
And I absolutely LOVE the feature that automatically sends reminders (after 30 days, 45 days...whatever you want) to clients who haven't paid.

Just been playing with Waves Accounting, per a recommendation from another vo-bb'r.

There's plenty of good options out there, find one that you like based on your workflow.

before investing in quickbooks make sure your banking institution supports it. my credit union doesn't. had to use quicken instead.

Hey Neil,
I have seen you pop up around the VO-BB this last month and I want to welcome you to our brand of crazy!

I appreciate the questions you are asking and your desire to learn form others. This will take you further down the road of VO and with better success.

The VO biz is like starting a small business. We all do this differently and there is room to build it so it works for your personality and giftings. Also, its scaleable and you can start very small and add equipment, training and processes that enhance your end product over time.

As for books, I use a spreadsheet. It allows me the most freedom to keep track of gigs and people as well as the links to the finished commercials. And VO people tend to be very high freedom people. The last thing I want to do is accounting...if I can help it.
