Wouldn't it be nice to relax and not worry about consistant mic placement throughout a book?

Anyone dabble in this?

Tried the Crown 311 but it sounded lousy.
The Countrymans, Audio technicas, DPA, and other similar mics seem promising.

The quality they are getting from these tiny capsules is nothing short of amazing, as long as the self-noise isn't too bad, EQ will do the rest.

I would love to be able to record on a head-mounted mic. However, I generally record without my cans on so just the mic alone would be best.

Unfortunately I have never seen a mic small enough to wear that would produce the kind of quality necessary. Sounds like that may be changing, though.

Actually, in my 30+ years in radio and VO, that's never been a problem. I learned a long time ago to move my body instead, unless there's a good acoustical reason to crowd the mic or go off mic.

The mic is always 8 to 10 inches away, right up and over there. I might move a couple of inches, but I'm always conscious of the "sweet spot" and stay in that area.

The head mics they're using in Broadway shows and during TED lectures sound pretty good, but they're in big performing spaces so I couldn't guess how that would translate to our kind of environments.
