When someone has a script that needs a professional voice, they have a service need.
They are not dangling "a job" in front of you— and you are not trying out for "a job".
YOU are offering your talent and expertise to help them get THEIR job done.

A professional Voice Over understands the above and frankly there aren't that many around. |

This is something that has annoyed me ever since I started hearing it - what - a few years ago? Where does this verbiage come from the p2p's? I book jobs. I don't enter contests. |

I have the same reaction when I hear about people "winning" an eBay auction. The money is flying out of the buyer's PayPal account; the "winner" is the seller. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Just standard business terminology as I see it--Not a slap in any VO's face. Companies make bids for work--the company that wins the bid, gets the work. Or job. Terms that can be used interchangeably, and ones that don't offend me in the least. I'm happy to win a job, and happy to cash the check. |

There are many parallels with the corporate/industrial world. In my old business the customer had multiple options. The request would go out, we'd all scrabble around putting together a proposal and then hopefully be invited to present to the board... usually on the same day as the competitors. We bid, we auditioned, and we won or lost. The same song and dance would repeat itself if we won the job, and I'd be putting out requests for my own sub-contractors.
We were professionals offering a service in a competitive marketplace. You bid, you audition... sometimes you win, sometimes you lose... sometimes it rains.
In one area, the average VO is treated far better than bidding in the corporate world. In that bear pit, you are far more likely to be in a "lowest bid wins" situation, or have the prospective customer playing games and bouncing back and forth playing one bidder off against the other. In VO, you are far more likely to get the gig on merit, rather than have the choice dictated by the bean-counters! _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Scott, I never saw this thread as having a negative connotation. You shouldn't have to preface posts with defensive posturing.
I do agree, it is semantics, but I also like to see myself in the service department. They have a need and we have the solution. |
