I'm also quite pleased to see you on the board too, Kevin!

One factor that should be considered is room noise. I've been listening to many auditions and clips lately and quite a few of them have considerable "bounce" off the walls, the desk, the mic stand, whatever, and that really can color the presentation and not in a good way. When I edit something together I can often mask a lot of that noise with gating from my compression software or background music or ambience, but that noise reduction should start on the talent's end.

Two old blankets on the wall or a used rug cost a lot less than most mics and preamps.

I've been dealing with that myself this week as I'm on the road through next Monday. I've been using the hotel's bedspread draped over my gear and myself to deflect the 'bounce'.

...And sweaty since I had to shut off the AC to the room while recording. It was most difficult on Thursday when I had a script in 'da hood' of 45 pages.
