I thought that was quite funny and pretty much accurate.

When a casting director/ad agency creative says "no announcers, no DJs" they're really flagging up one thing ...Please don't sound like a complete tw*t!

The good thing: It worked on two levels... the subject was something we can all relate to. Even in my short career I've been caught out a few times and now have a simple "my screw-ups are fixed for free, your screw-ups are chargeable" (I paraphrase) statement in all my agreements. Secondly, the puking performance was so clichéd that it was funny in a short dose.

The bad thing: I'd never heard of "The Greaseman" before, so I hit YouTube to see more. Eeeeew! I need a shower! ... Although Stern ripping him up for his incredibly insincere and endless apology for a racist comment was mildly amusing... a shock-jock criticizing a puke-jock had a small nugget of irony in it.

I should know better. When someone posts a YouTube link, it inevitably leads to more clickerage and a descent into the mire. Or is it just me?

That was fun to see again. "Grease" is an old friend and former colleague and, in my opinion, far more talented than Stern ever was. A couple of ill-conceived adlibs derailed his career.

I never knew how he was able to stay on the air with his NON ill-conceived adlibs.

An EXTREMELY talented man, he was one of the GREAT radio entertainers.

I didn't see contempt for radio production ... Just radio salesmen. And hey, who doesn't have a little bit of that?

Who else remembers stacking and loading and firing carts to produce those multi-layered spots without a multitrack machine?

I agree, Todd, but he was using his "puker DJ" voice that he only used when making fun of puker DJs. Wink

That's right Lee, the Greaseman was one of the greats. And that was an act....acting.....you know the Holy Grail of VO. The best of the DJ's were always
actors too. ALWAYS. And it is a skill set that all VO's cannot do. To sneer at an artform that was every bit as hard to get to the top of as VO is beneath you fine artists. The world of the DJ is no more. It has vanished like the dinosaurs.
But the wit, wisdom, creativity, and voice that had to be delivered every quarter hour. hour after hour, day after day, was easily comparable to the talent of the VO. Yes there were soooo many terrible, amateur, puking DJ's. How many VO pretender's to the throne, wannabee's are there?

Yes, for those of us who remember grease pencils and razor blade editing, this was really quite funny. It just wasn't easy to change that phone number!

Looking back on it now, it was a lot of fun. I remember the first time working with an 8 track...I thought I had reached the pinnacle of production technology.

Oh man, that brought back some memories! I remember seeing this years back, great to see it again. Greaseman was one of the greats. And who doesn't love mixing spots on the fly (with SFX on remote cart decks), then have the sales guy screw ya with bad copy?

No disrespect meant to anyone who can climb to the top of a difficult and competitive profession (or the skills required to do so). I am at a disadvantage because I do not have the traditional American DJ as a point of cultural reference. Back in the UK, they were always viewed as something quite alien and strange... and more than a little obnoxious. My limited investigation of "The Greaseman" on YouTube only served to reinforce my stereotype of the cliched "puker" DJ (incidentally, a description I first heard here).

As for the video posted, I saw it as a humourous swipe at moving goalposts and ridiculous production schedules... something we all know about. As for the style... well, it's a child of its time.

EXACTLY, Bish. You "got" it! Greaseman was, indeed, a child of his time. Here in the states, that style was envogue at the time (maybe not quite so bombastic). Although, I wouldn't advise anyone starting their career in this day and age to emulate him, he was "one of the greats".

I also have memories of using my big toe to punch that last cart as my hands were otherwise "engaged" while cueing a sound effect on a record and riding gain on the Gatesway II.
