I just got on Voice123, and found out somebody tagged my commercial demo as "Apple-ish." It's awful flattering, but I have literally done no VO work yet and my potential clients are nowhere near Apple-sized (if I'm not just being pessimistic). How do you think my potential clients will see this? Might it deter the smaller ones or is it safe to assume that "Apple" always means something good?

My profile... http://voice123.com/jackburr
(Sorry if the link doesn't show up, I'm on my iPhone...oh god, apple is everywhere.

It means nothing. Seriously.

I hopped over to your web site, and I see what they were getting at with that first clip.... but, as eX says, "It means nothing." There's an audiobook review on Audible where the reviewer says my voice is a dead-ringer for Neil Gaiman's. Seriously? I can see eX raising an eyebrow now Smile

... and to answer the question that you didn't ask... You may want to reconsider the V123 link on your web page. The page is clean, and works quite nicely. If someone listens to your demo and likes it, you have an email link... why send them off to somewhere that exposes them to hundreds of competitors?*

*I'm really trying to remember which of our sages bangs this drum... I think it's Doug Turkel, but it's such a good point that I'm stealing it (with attribution).

What Peter said.

Not about the Neil Gaiman thing. I'd actually have to listen to opine on that. Gasp

About the v123 link. You don't want to brand yourself as a v123 talent.

Doug. Yep. It's Doug. Smart.

I'm somewhat surprised that anybody still indulges in the practice of "tagging" other Voice123 member profiles, but if someone has tagged you as "Apple-ish," it could actually be slightly beneficial. In this copy-cat world, so many VO producers, instead of trying to be original, seek to emulate the "flavor of the month." Hence you see requests for people who sound like Morgan Freeman, Mike Rowe, Dennis Leary, or "the Allstate guy" (because they don't know Dennis Haysbert's name). And one other style that seems to be getting quite a few requests these days is for a sound like Apple's spots. So if that's something you do, and thanks to that tagging, it is now part of your profile, you may find yourself getting more auditions for that particular kind of VO.

By the way, being pegged as "Apple-ish" has nothing to do with the size of the companies you do work for. It strictly relates to your vocal style as perceived by the person who bestowed that label on you.

Every once in a blue moon, I will click on the link to "tag" voices and am faced with the urge to critique, not tag, but that is verboten.

Maybe a nice "Golden Delicious Apple-ish" would have been a more positive response.

Indeed, it's me. Though I'd rather give credit for it to simple common sense.

I mean, when was the last time you saw Macy's chartering buses to take their customers over to Walmart?

It turns out, common sense isn't all that common.

Some fun facts about that tag, to give you some insight:

1. No one sees them, but you. If you never mentioned it, no one would know. lol
2. It was left by a voice talent.
3. They were supposed to be used for a new search feature a few years ago, but it never happened. We kept the tags because people told us it was kinda cool to see a random unbiased thought on a demo.

Apple-ish sounds good. I have seen tags on my end like, "Keep your day job" or "please quit". LOL And....that's why no one but the profile owner can see them. My tags are hip and conversational. *phew*

So, it is OK to offer some critique?

Well, we don't moderate that section of the site. It just operates on its own.

If you left a critique or a tag, we would only know if someone told us. It's just info for voice talent from an anonymous 3rd party.
