With the flu very prevalent this season (critically so in some areas), I thought I'd share some knowledge to wipe out some widely-accepted assumptions.

Contrary to what we might be led to believe in the TV spots, a quick shot of Lysol® Spray WILL NOT disinfect surfaces. Lysol DOES kill 99.9% of viruses and bacteria, but it must be used properly.

Surfaces are considered disinfected only if they are FIRST thoroughly cleaned and dried, and THEN sprayed with Lysol until wet. The surface MUST REMAIN WET FOR 10 MINUTES and left alone to air dry. Only then can the surface be considered disinfected.

If you have kids, or if you use Lysol spray in the kitchen in food prep areas: After using Lysol spray on on food contact surfaces or on things kids can put in their mouth, they MUST be washed again afterward. Lysol does what it says it'll do, but it also leaves behind some nasty stuff that should not be ingested.

Same goes for any of those alcoholic hand-cleaners that Americans are so fond of. Use soap and rinse properly.

My understanding of the number one transmission method, and it's not kissing (yay!), it's your hands picking it up from another hand and then touching your eyes and/or nose, and since most bugs take 3 to 4 days to incubate, a perfectly healthy looking person can give it to you just as easily as a sufferer.

Laves sus manos, señor y señorita dudes.

Correctamundo. But it's not just other hands; it's anything those infected hands have touched that we wind up touching*. Shopping carts/baskets, money... think about it.

If we could only teach ourselves not to touch our eyes, nose and mouth (as we must unknowingly do countless times during the day), we'd drop the risk considerably. But that's why frequent and proper hand washing is so important.

FACT: The surface with the highest concentration of germs: the inside door knob/handle of restrooms. Many people still don't wash their hands (or well enough) after finishing.

*My info comes from the websites of the National Institutes of Health, and various clinics and universities.

Flying out to Tampa tomorrow. Escalators, Security lines, and a couple hours in a tin can with recirculated germs..... Can't wait. Shocked

I don't like being a contrarian (stop laughing at the back), but I'm a little worried about excessive fear of "catching stuff". I fully accept that a simple cold can have a significant financial effect on VOs, and I was brought up to have good bathroom habits (and I'll certainly often use my sleeve-wrapped hand to open a bathroom door).... but I am worried about the obsession that we're all getting about sanitizing everything. The cynic in me just knows that it's being foisted upon us as a lifestyle by the makers of Purell etc. (much like bottled water has been). I honestly believe that we are making ourselves more susceptible to "the big one" (either personal or pandemic) because we're not allowing our body's natural defenses to get the occasional work-out. Apart from that, it's all so arbitrary... a sanitizer before grabbing a supermarket cart but not on the door handles in public places... it's not just the bathroom... and how many hands has that $20 bill been through?

As a strong proponent of the "five second rule", I also support mud pies, skinned knees, and kissing. Wink

But I also wash my hands, try to keep them out of my mouth, and try to keep my fingers out of my nose. I also get my flu shot as soon as it's available.... and try not to be social with those that are infected or infectious.

That said, I damn near cancelled the flight in favor of driving. Rolls Eyes

Great point, Peter. I agree. We began hearing about a decade ago already that the efficacy of antibiotics were decreasing because folks (I believe they specifically said parents, at the time) tend to overreact and demand an antibiotic for the child with a simple cold.

We can't fault the Mom who doesn't want her kids to get sick but, just like the overuse of antibiotics, the over (or obsessive) use of disinfectants all over the house contributes to antibiotic-resistant bacteria. An 'unreal' world where, if we aren't exposed at all to the things that might make us sick, we can't build up a defense against them.

I did an audition for a video that claimed that for a product (ie hand cleaner or Lysol type) to be able to claim that it kills 99% of germs, it only has to kill 5% of know strains of bacteria.

And antibiotics don't help against virus-type infections! The hell is wrong with people?

I'm with Bish, by the way. I noticed an overwhelming sense of carefulness among Americans and germs. The dealbreaker was a circly handle-looking thing, jutting out of the bathroom door. You were supposed to open it by putting a forearm through and then pulling the door open, sparing your delicate hand the germophobes' kiss of death. Genius!

People want what is fast, takes the least effort and/or thinking.

I have to stop there, because that mindset also contributes to many other issues and, trust me, nobody wants me to go down that road.

But, here is not only support for proper hand washing, but also some eye-opening stats:
