|
|
Any Buddhists or people who know the pantheon here? I have a narration that has the name "Vaisravana" in it, one of the earliest Buddhist gods. A quick search of Forvo.com turns up nothing, and the closest I've found are pronunciations of the Chinese version of his name.
Anybody know what it sounds like? I'm inclined to go with VAZE-rah-VAH-nah. _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

CC, wish I could answer your question, but I can't.
But I also can't let your thread go by without sharing with you a very, very funny - and horribly trying - job I had some years ago narrating a very long-form Hindu thing for some professor in CA who was taking a presentation to India.
I stumbled and bumbled my way thru this gawd-awful thing and posted just a small fragment of the many, many outtakes on the old V123 forum. THEN the amazingly talented Dave DeAndrea then took my outtakes and crafted them into THIS work of art:

CC, I'm no expert but I'm a certified yoga instructor with years of Sanskrit under my belt. I've never met an asana I didn't like (sorry, yoga joke).
Anyway, it looks like you have it right. In Sanskrit you pronounce every letter. Your inflection seems right, too. I think you should feel comfortable with that and go with it. You can always record it in a way that will allow you to punch in an edit undetected if they have an issue with it.
I'm not sure if there are Sanskrit audio dictionaries (my 'puter is about to die and I left the cable over at the barn) but you could look that up. GOOD LUCK! _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

ThankEE!!!
The temple folk said roughly the same thing so I guess I'm on the right track.

Hah!
I'll give you names. A few years ago we did a video about Mars exploration and it started out with the actor saying a list of the various names of Mars throughout the ages. Here they are without any guide to pronunciation:
Nabu
Nirgal
Urbarra
Salbatanu
Verethragna
Mustabarru
Lohitanga
Pyroeis
Mirihka
Angares
Ares
Here's a link to a page with the actual video (in parts):
http://www.lochnessproductions.com/shows/mq/mq_previews.html
Under "View the whole show!" click on Part 1 and listen.
I spent a couple of days researching the names and pronunciations. It was a delight to hear the actor say those words as if he'd been saying them all his life. We sent phonetic pronunciations when we sent the script and then went over them in the studio on narration day.
Research is fun when it's applicable. _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |
