Oy vey...just got this email from a new potential client:

Quote:
Great demos Adam.
I’m a senior producer with thiscompany.com
We are always looking for talented...and reasonably priced voices.
I’ve attached a script i just received from a radio station rep that’s pitching a client. Send me back a read and we’ll produce it. It’s a freebie. If you wanna help we wanna hear what you got.

The fact that he italicized "reasonably priced" makes me think he really means "absurdly cheap." I was just going to ignore him or try to educate him on the fact that voice talent are generally paid for fully produced demos.

OR - I also thought about recording the spot and changing the company name, then sending it along as an "audition."

I think the first two words of your post said it all.

The phrase "if you wanna help" borders on charity. Enforce your professionalism. It's nothing personal. It's business. Rally the spine!

That short e-mail contained enough red flags to outfit an entire squad of majorettes.

Adam, would you like to read that email through the lens of my 25 years of experience with receiving requests like this one?

(I'll assume that you just said, "yes.") Smile

Quote:
Great demos Adam.

Adam, you are fabulous, and I'd like to stroke your ego a bit more, but that might make me sound as desperate as I am.

Quote:

I'm pretty cool, too...just look at my title.

Quote:
We are always looking for talented...and reasonably priced voices.

Again, we think you're great, but only if you work for ridiculously low rates. (Oh, and I italicized "reasonably priced" so that if we do end up working together – which we won't, 'cause that'd mean I'd have to pay you – I can always say, "Why do you think I italicized "reasonably priced?" It's 'cause I never intended to pay you real money anyway."

Quote:
I’ve attached a script i just received from a radio station rep that’s pitching a client.

I don't give a crap about you...it's all about me and my needs.

Quote:

Do some free work for us. For free. If you fall for any of this, we're listening.

Or consider sending this response back:

"I often give to charitable 501(c) organizations; your company is clearly not charitable.

My fees are based upon experience, talent and skills, and professionalism. Please let me know when your company is able to PAY for the services I offer.

Your Name here
President and CEO"

In other words - Just say, NO thank you!

Thanks, Diane, that's hilarious! I'd never heard the term "grocer's apostrophe" before.

(Though I was referring to Ugh. Wanna.)

He is not a potential new client. He is a potential regret and time suck.

Between the 'i' the 'wanna' (twice!) and the italics, seems like a polite no is a good start and end.

If you'd like to take the high road, send him back an email with some of your sample rates and let him know if "you wanna work with me, I'm gonna charge you this."
