|
|
Had my first job the other day. Trying not to get too excited, but honestly, I'm super stoked. Thought I'd share a few details from the experience. I found it interesting.
Did the aud with Blue Snowball w/ pop filter in Mom & Dad's guest room, in front of a blanket draped over a closet door. Client replied via email stating they enjoyed the read but it "didn't sound as rich and clear" as other auds they receive, asked what equipment I had. Explained I was running a very low-budget operation, but offered to "workshop a few recording techniques" and send another take.
All while thinking to myself, "well, I'm sure I won't get this one, but why not give it a shot?"
Removed the pop filter and recorded a new take from my car (Saw that Zurek sometimes records in his car when he's on the road).
BOOKED IT!!
I think removing the pop filter is a must when recording with this LQ USB mic, no? What do you guys think?
Anyway, moral of the story: Get involved with doing something you love, use your head, and don't underestimate yourself.
PS, thanks to those of you who provided advice/feedback via VO-BB. Couldn't have done this without you!

That's very cool, and interesting. As soon as budget allows, you need to upgrade from that Snowball though. Congrats! _________________ Scott R. Pollak

Congrats! ..and yes, it's always better to work without a pop filter if you can. I haven't used one in ages.

Congratulations! I started with a snowball too - mounted in a pop-up hamper stuffed with acoustic foam a la Harlan Hogan.
+1 to upgrading when you can though.

Congrats on the gig!
Regarding the use of a pop filter, I'm with Bruce. I rarely use one and rely upon my mic technique to avoid plosives, which you should do whether you use a filter or not. If you work so close to the mic that you're going to spray it with saliva, you may want to use a pop filter as a "raincoat" to protect the mic's inner workings, but you probably shouldn't be doing that either. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
