I come from a theatre background, in which "break a leg" is said instead of "good luck" and there are whisperings and murmurings about the Scottish play one must never say by name backstage.

So my question is this: Are there such superstitions in the voiceover community? Do we wish each other luck or do we say things like "good vibrations" or "may the decibels be ever in your favor"? Do we rub Porky Pig's belly - or make sure our microphone is pointing towards the Disney studios in Anaheim?

What superstitions are uniquely ours?

I have an agent who, every time he sends out auditions, closes with "Break a jaw". LOL

In the UK it is considered unlucky to NOT know another VO. Needless to say one can not have heard of everyone so there is a polite response.

"We used Zebedee Caffrey on our last campaign, do you know him?"

"Mmmmmmmmmm I'm familiar with his work"

The last person to respond that he had never heard of ..... was eaten by a Zebra.

Oh.

Poor fellow.

From now on, my response will be "Oh yes! I know [fellow VO artist] intimately!"

That way I can avoid a zebra fate.

I got kicked out of Bob's animation workshop for doing that...

But I booked my next five auditions, so it was worth it.

my great great grandmother anna borelli used to recommend tracing with your finger the sign of the cross 7 times on the bottom of your foot if it was asleep.

My Dad would do that 3 times whenever there was something in our eye.

Around these parts with this family "good luck" seems to fit but perhaps we should come up with something else? I've got nothing witty off the top of my head, however.

I'm so afraid of the ocean I won't even Open a box of Mrs Paul's Fish sticks unless I'm in the company of another adult.
