It looks like Google is getting ready to go back into the recorded advertising business. I just received (in my spam filter) an invite to learn more about VoiceOwl.
http://voiceowl.com/
You're invited to fill out their survey, one question of which is:
Quote: | What would you charge a client for 75 words (30 seconds) or less? |
Luckily their form gives you the room to say, "It depends on what size market this is for and whether it's radio, TV, or non-broadcast. $X to $X."
But will they make allowances for such differences? My bet is no... partially because they follow that question up with:
Quote: | If you didn't have to audition for that same 30 second spot, what is cheapest price you would be willing to accept? |
Sheesh.

Not associated in any way with Google.
Hosted by GoDaddy. That tells you something right there.
Domain name registered to one Nathan Puls..... a little digging reveals Nathan to be a 20-something SAG/AFTRA actor/voice-actor. LA based. Demo reels include commercial and animation. Rate card begins at $100 for a 30. $150 for a 60.

From the VoiceOwl site:
Quote: | How It Works
1. Bob looks for a voice
2. He likes Susie's voice
3. Bob chooses Susie (No audition needed)
4. Susie does an amazing job on project
5. Bob comes back for more |
Kinda' seems to me that there's a step missing. _________________ Doug Turkel (tur-KELL)

3.a) Bob informs Susie that there's no pay, but the project will sound great on her demo reel! _________________ John LaPiana

I don't give a "hoot" ... There, I said it. Now nobody else has to.
I don't understand something. If he's SAG/AFTRA hasn't he sort of agreed not to work below union rates and pick at the low-hanging fruit*?... isn't that the perogative of us non-union wallahs? I also get annoyed when I see disabled drivers in perfectly good open parking spots... Hey, you have your own stuff which you guard jealously... stop taking the scraps that you leave me!
... and no, I'm not being 100% serious... but if I was the local SAG/AFTRA representative, I'd be calling on this guy. With a baseball bat.
*Yes, I know jobs can be converted, etc. but I thought there were minimums. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Excellent survey for him to find out how many SAG-AFTRA members will do non-union stuff for less than union minimums, and how low will they go! My question is about the “Do you have a Commercial Demo? For only $9.99...” What? Is that to post a demo...or to have him produce my custom Demo?
Also, the questions ask about the Commercial/Animation, are the only demos listed on his TAG Talent Page.

Is that a thing? Why would one charge less for not having to audition? _________________ www.juliaknippen.com

Just spoke with the VoiceOwl, after returning my call, he responded to the few questions that I had. It looks like he will launch in about a month, after reviewing the responses from the people who had taken the survey. The site will list between 50-100 VO professionals, who will be invited to participate. There will be no cost to the talent, and only a small commission (FEE) will be reduced from the payment. He indicates auditions “will not” be necessary for the talent, which is what will set it apart from the other P2P stuff, if they like your listed demo, presto you are the chosen one, booked, paid, and then delivered!!! _________________ -----

Here's why I thought it was a Google operation... go to the bottom of the survey and click on "terms of service", and you get this Google page on terms of service headed by the VoiceOwl logo. Hmmm.
You can fool some of the people some of the time, and me quite a bit actually when you do something like that.
