I assume that this would be by not actually drowning.

Whenever I start thinking about the low rates in some sections of the VO industry, I think about the two years or so I tried to sell photographs (stock, corporate and industrial). Seriously, there is less money in photography than VO... there are some seriously good amateurs out there whose work is first rate... but they'll work for hobby-level money. The pro photo industry is a cautionary tale, and places like Getty Images, iStockPhoto and Pond 5 have supplied an easy route to market and driven the prices into the basement. I'm pretty sure these places are the model for the low-end voice services!
