Panda Express is not good Chinese food (or even actually Chinese), but I'll admit to having a craving for it every now and again. _________________ Corey "Vox Man" Snow

Colorado has a real lack of culture...plus, I worked on fire suppression systems in the hoods of kitchens for a few year. I won't eat at any local Chinese food places, the kitchens are disgusting. This is not a generalization, I have been in most of the kitchens in the city. Japanese, sure, but Chinese...yikes. |

Never look in the kitchen. Never ask what's in the sausage.
As Chinese as Panda Express... as Italian as Dominos... as Mexican as Taco Bell... as Australian as The Outback Steak House
I have no expectations of franchises or chains, but I had to talk someone out of walking out of a Sushi place a few weeks back... the guy wielding the knives and prepping the food wasn't Japanese and it just didn't seem right to her... especially as Sushi has an element of dinner theatre to it.

I'm still trying to figure out why they bother putting a Red Lobster in a place like Portsmouth, NH, where you can pluck real lobsters right out of the ocean. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Believe it or not a lot of Latinos in Arizona really like Taco Bell. That's kind of like growing up on Baskin Robbins thick and creamy milk shakes and then deciding that Ensure supplements in a can are a tasty way to go. No comprendo.

I don't know how widespread they are, but up here in New York there's a large chain of (so-called) fish'n'chip shops called Arthur Treacher's (I think they co-brand and co-locate with Nathan's in some places). Named after a British actor, they wave the Union Jack and purport to be very British, serving traditional fish'n'chips. My first encounter was very Pythonesque...
Scene opens. A hungry Brit walks to the counter...
Cod & chips please.
- Cod? I don't....
OK... rock & chips then.
- What's "rock"?
Hmmm... plaice & chips then.
- Huh?
OK... I'll take the haddock.
- No... I don't know what that is either.
It's probably up there with cod as the most traditional fish to have with fish'n'chips (sigh). What fish do you have?
- Battered fish.
I know... what type?
- Ummm... flounder I think. Oh, it may be tilapia... someone told me we're getting tilapia. Are you Australian?
Exit.
Further investigation revealed that Arthur Treacher's actually uses pollock, a traditional UK cat food (although admittedly starting to be sold more widely due to cod becoming over-fished and more expensive.) _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Truth, there is a Brit-themed restaurant (fish 'n chips, Scotch eggs, bangers, kidneys and all) in Phoenix called The Codfather. They'll make you an offal you can't refuse.

Virtually all fast food fish in the USA is pollock, which is kind of grey looking so they bleach it to make it look more like cod.
By the way, the reason enough of us Yanks knew the name Arthur Treacher that they could hang it on a restaurant is, he was the "announcer" on the old Merv Griffin Show. He was the "Ed McMahon" to Merv's "Johnny Carson." _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Arthur Treacher's. Quite widspread in the Philly area during my youth. I was never impressed, and am surprised to know the chain still exists. _________________ www.voiceoverdrew.com

I find difficulty finding British options where I live. On Long Island, nine out of ten restaurants are Italian with a smattering of various Asian establishments. The only time I can get a real Brit culinary experience (hold the sarcasm, please) is by going to an Irish place where the sausages are tasty, the black puddin' is glorious and nothing is low-fat or healthy. Why the dearth of Brit establishments? I blame the revolutionary wars. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish
