Last night I travelled to Inverness so I could watch Red Dawn at the cinema. The film is for people who as chldren read adventure comics under the bed clothes by torchlight; in my case it was The Eagle, my older brother let me have them when he was done. Once every couple of years I get my "I'm eight years old and am going to the pictures" fix.

ANY ROAD UP.... Here's the point. The VUE cinema subjected me and the other two people in the audience to a number of trailers, GI Joe, Host, something in which Tom Cruise appears and can't remember the others. Every trailer had one thing in common ..... No VO!.

For the guys who can do THAT voice, the smart money says diversify. There's still a few pounds/dollars to be made from the affected growl but you are becoming more important than THAT voice.

Sad, but true. Maybe it's just a trend. Still plenty of audition requests for "that movie trailer voice" though. Sadly they're mostly for local pizzerias and proctology award dinners, but hey, it's work.

Which led me to the thought about computers taking over VO. Yeah, the speech quality will get better, but the real bugger for the developers will be instilling nuance into AI VO. Not happening anytime soon....waaaayy too much information to program in.

Which reminded of my jazz drummer brother in L.A. years ago worrying about electronic drum kits taking over for human skin thwackers. Turns out he didn't have to fear them. They don't have nuance, they can't improvise.

I guess that's one way to interpret "no announcer types." Shocked

Perhaps all the trailers were simply two doved-tailed Iranian double pauses. In which case they were well executed.

Already a few years ago, on an eLearning blog, there was discussion on fiddling with the HTML code to add emphasis etc to synthesized speech.

I chimed in: "I thought the goal of synthesized speech was to save money. How will spending hours fiddling with code – to make lifeless chatter a teeny bit more nuanced, as opposed to simply hiring an experienced narrator, who will be finished long before the code will be – save money?" There was no reply.

I still think there is too much emphasis on the 'e' and not nearly enough on the 'learning.' Doing things simply because we can is never better than doing things for a valid reason.

Interesting, Bobby. I had no idea that theater trailer money wasn't better than TV spots for the same. Except, of course, the venerable St. La Fontaine. I believe by his own admission that he was at about $10,000/page circa Rush Hour 2 (in one take, no less).

Having done movie trailers for international release and national/international TV commercials, Bobby's figures are on the low side in some cases the agent would earn more than the rates quoted. Of course if they're V123 rates then they are wildly optimistic Laugh

I noticed the same absence of VO in the trailers here in the US about 4 years ago!

I also think the reason is due to the fact that on TV, when you dash to get a snack you can still hear the TV trailer, but in the theatre you are more a captive audience.

But what about the visually impaired? Braille Trailers?

Sarcastic

Guess the guys that put trailers together just got a bit more of their work cut out for themselves with no voice to take up space and all Smile

Ah nuts, I was going to do my own VO/fanmade trailer for The Lone Ranger (for a laugh of course) because the official ones make it look crap. Maybe I will anyway.
