In my wanna-be status, I don't need this yet, and some of you could see this coming:

As far as I can see, as with most internet things, this is a mixture of both fact and fiction. The piece quoted above seems to be a commentary piece on something the author heard with no backup. Big shout out to Courvo, who in his blog, cited Leslie Stimson on the Radio World blog. This seems to be where the latest "ISDN is dead" story originates. Reproduced on the RW World blog is a scan of a Verizon document stating, in essence, that ISDN would not be offered in Maryland after May 18th. Stimson talks about "East Coast Markets"... and now the word "on the streets" is that Verizon are pulling the plug on new ISDN in the North-East from May 18th. I see no supporting material that translates Maryland into the entire North-East.... but hell, it makes for a better story!

There is no doubt that ISDN will go away at some point. Unless Verizon/AT&T start to actively pull the copper out of the streets (which certainly may happen someday) I can see the service being allowed to atrophy before being killed... "no new installs" is probably the way it will go, but all the while there is a standard POTS distribution in an area, ISDN can ride on it's back... all it requires is a reconfigured channel card in the local fiber network access point.

So, while this may have an element of truth, I think it's slightly exaggerated (what, sensationalism and hyperbole in the media... quelle horreur!). It should also be noted that Verizon's plans to stop offering the service in Maryland is (as far as I can see) still subject to the Maryland Public Service Commission's approval (which admittedly is probably a rubber-stamp).

The broadcast industry seems to be warming up for a fight here... you can't mess with Sports... it's un-American! It may also be interesting to see how this pans out in major metropolitan areas (sorry Baltimore) where a lot of radio (local and national) people connect via ISDN from home studios (my tame Verizon ISDN guy tells me that Long Island is littered with radio people who work from home).

The patient has a terminal condition... but still refuses to die.

It seems we've been hearing the "ISDN is dead" thing for what?going on 10 years?

But,..speaking as someone who's pretty much smack dab between Baltimore & DC, (who supports the Ravens & the Orioles)..I'm glad I have Source connect

I forwarded the article to Dave Immer at Digifon and he replied:

I guess we all know the way the wind is blowing. I expect there to be a spike in ISDN orders in the next month... Going forward my advice to those who already have it is hang on to it.

Kind regards,
Dave

Hi George:

There is no press release, and I doubt you will see one.

This is based on several people starting to set up the NFL season…and they have all been told by Verizon that this is the case. And…it’s been reported in Radio World among other trades.

And that's what they get for letting those lines lapse in the off season. Surely they made enough advertising revenue off those lines to keep them up. Penny wise.... etc....

Right...and we're supposed to close on a house in NJ sometime in May. Shocked

I emailed my contact at Verizon who was helping me during our home search confirming where ISDN was available and she wasn't even aware of this.
I asked her whether it would be wise to start the ordering process NOW even though we haven't closed yet. She's getting in touch with her supervisor & getting back to me.

I may have to get in good with the seller & his attorney & have the ISDN line installed before the closing.

PLEASE keep your fingers crossed for me!

I wonder if they'll allow one to MOVE lines that are current when they cut off new lines.

Not according to their statement.
You can keep the ones you have but you won't be able to change or move them.

I haven't seen a statement - is it posted anywhere? I've only seen the talkers commentary and the radioworld article - but nothing from Verizon.

It's on the back of your Verizon ISDN bill

My Verizon bill just arrived... true enough, it states it clearly on page 4. No new ISDN service will be provided... nor any moves, changes or additions to existing service after May 18th. In my case, this is subject to review by the New York State Public Service Commission. Also some small price increases to be implemented.

Assuming this is a rubber-stamp approval, then my earlier comments are somewhat overshadowed. Shocked
