It is utterly impossible for me to publicly express enough heartfelt gratitude to Corey Snow.
In this thread:
http://www.vo-bb.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=15609
... I talked about how a recent Windows update totally corrupted my computer. Well, not totally, I could still do a lot of things, but there were many, many things I could NOT do after the botched update, ranging from simple things like changing my desktop background all the way up to no longer being able to use Audition CS5.5. Thank God my 10 year old version of Cool Edit pro still functioned, otherwise I was dead in the water.
This morning - SATURDAY morning, mind you - Corey spent about 3 hours with me via Skype diagnosing my computer.
He solved EVERYTHING. It was truly amazing. I felt like a monkey in a cage, Corey said "do this" and I did. He said "do that" and I did, and in the end I was rewarded with a 100% restored and fully functional machine AND Audition CS 5.5.
Corey... publicly: THANK YOU!!!!!! You are insanely smart and gifted, but even more so.... just a downright nice human being. God Bless you, my friend! _________________ Scott R. Pollak

That is extraordinarily kind of you to say, Scott. I'm very glad I could help out!
For those interested, the problem looks to have been a bad update of his machine to Service Pack 1 for Windows 7. No idea why it happened, but typical causes are power failures or a crash while the update is going on, leaving the system in a half-updated state.
The result, however, was that a number of critical modules (DLLs) on Scott's system were either the wrong version, or not properly registered with the core OS, or a combination of the two. My money is on the former.
In the end, the system simply couldn't use a number of its own internal components, and a lot of stuff under the hood was just not working, and failing in pretty bizarre ways.
The solution was the System File Checker (SFC), a tool shipped with Windows to detect and resolve corrupt system files. Thankfully, it worked for Scott's system and we were able to apply SP1 with no issues. _________________ Corey "Vox Man" Snow

Great job Corey!! Thanks for filling us in on the specifics of what was going on. I know that will be useful down the road when the inevitable problems arise. _________________ Pax vobiscum

Your approbation is duly and happily noted! I'm so pleased to be on the same coast with Seņor Snow.
That fixit program sounds like something us Mac users have to do when things start to go sideways and we Repair Permissions.

I realized I was remiss by not also acknowledging that Zach Meissner spent a fair amount of time with me on the phone as well, attempting to diagnose the problem. While Zach wasn't successful at solving it, it's evident the guy is equally as gifted as Corey in terms of computer-ese and willingness to help. Thanks for the help you offered, too, Zach! _________________ Scott R. Pollak

Here's a link to the instructions on using the SFC in Windows:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
This was actually the third or fourth thing we tried; most signs pointed to some kind of problem with the security system or maybe with the networking components, but the suggested fixes for those led nowhere. _________________ Corey "Vox Man" Snow

Apparently you've never worked at a radio station where the sales people write their own ad copy. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
