So, Sony is having a big sale on Spectral Layers Pro. Anyone here use it? Is it useful for clicks or breaths or things like that?

Got this as well, Mel. I, too, am spectral-curious. George? Dan? Dan?

Nope, never tried it. I never use spectral editing. Haven't had a need for it yet.

I use Adobe Audition's Spectral View EXTENSIVELY, and from what I can see, Sony's version really wouldn't be too useful for VO. If it could be integrated into your DAW, that might be more helpful, but from what I've seen, you can't just hop in and tweak audio on the fly. AA lets you do this will stellar ease.

Check out my tutorial on how to use AA Spectral view to remove pops and clicks, and you can see how quickly you can use it to tweak audio. I don't think you could do that with Sony SL unless you used SL as your DAW (which might be possible...but not designed for it).

There is a bunch of blabbering in that video, but if you jump to about 2:30, then I start talking about spectral view.

Personally I LOVE editing in the spectral mode. Some people don't use it, but I have found it very very helpful. For the price of Sony SL, you could probably just get a copy of Adobe Audition. The spectral editor has been around since version 3, but it wasn't nearly as effective in the earlier versions.

Is spectral editing the same as the spectographic editing function in Adobe Audition? Dan Lenard did a post-production webinar last night that I attended, and he is really into using the spectrogram/graph for editing. It was my first introduction to it and really fascinating. it's more about learning how to recognize common issues and sounds as recurring shapes in the graph. It seems much more flexible and exact for editing than zooming into a 2-dimensional waveform.

If that has nothing to do with spectral layers pro, please disregard this comment and forgive my ignorance!

Edited: Sorry, Jason posted his response while I was composing mine. +1 to how cool spectral editing is!
