The most surprising thing in that video was the disclosure that Bess is non-union!
Point made. Point made well. My other take-away from that was the way you addressed the mic (you can put my address on it if you want). I tend to crowd the mic sometimes (not as bad as an ex-DJ)... your space (and that bloody Neumann) allows you to back away and let the voice itself do the work. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Our raw audio needs to be as good as it can be as the sound is decided by the person who does the knob twiddling in post. We obsess over things which (unless we know what we're doing and know how the producer wants things to sound) are not our concern.
In the video I recorded audio in less than ideal conditions. Could a sound person fix it in post? He said he could ..and did.
Someone once suggested a mic and another gizmo because it would give my bottom end a lift ... Were I a middle-aged woman in LA I might be interested as I would look good in jeans again. But for me the VO, useless because every sound engineer with whom I have worked either on ISDN or in person has done one thing ...ROLLED OFF THE BASS. |

Yes Philip!
When submitting MP3s for commercial ILR adverts, I have, as a matter of course de-breathed, added a teeny bit of compression and normalised. Why? Because I want the file I send yo be the best representation of my voice as possible, I'm precious about my sound. Producers have thanked me for it and said that the quality of audio I give them is fantastic. I have an acoustically treated soundbooth and a U87.
Recently I started a discussion on a VO FB group as I was interested in how VOs delivered their reads to commercial producers. The vast majority of them said that all they do is take out their mistakes and send it off, many of them even leave errors in! Now this is the interesting bit - I would say that 99% of all the producers responded saying NEVER do ANYTHING to the read. It's THEIR DECISION whether to de-breath, add this or add that, all they want is a dry, RAW file that has not been tampered with.
From then on all I have been doing is topping and tailing, removing my mistakes and sending off the raw file. After all, when I do ISDN sessions, they have to chop out all the crap don't they? It hurts a bit, but I know that's just my ego, I'll get used to it!! _________________ https://www.darrenaltman.com/

It all comes down to the client and market in the end... Ask the client what THEY want in the delivered file. If they hired you on a p2p site, chances are there is no audio engineer on staff at their esteemed facility to deal with your raw audio properly. They use it how you sent it. If how you sent it is how you want to hear it in the final product, then there's nothing to worry about. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.
