Today's political script included this:

Ethics isn't just talk, it's an action

Inaction, an action, it's action..................

Ad nauseam.

Remember these are college graduates who are writing this stuff...

I always wonder how it got past the Legal Eagles, their secretaries, the computer's grammer checker, etc... Who proof reads and edits this stuff?

Isn't our education system grand/grande? grate/great/good... O.K.?

Oh my....

The big problem (huge! major! vexing!) was, while reading it, it sounded to me like inaction....which I'm certain the copywriter didn't intend. So I left out "an" in a few takes so they'd have choices. I got no response back so I assume they a.) received the files and 2.) are okay with them.

now THAT'S inaction!!

Mine are "choose between these three things!"

and "There's many things to do."

It's as if "among" and "there are" don't exist.

My producer ar 'BZ always changes "over" to "more than".

Over 500 cars in stock!
becomes
More than 500 cars in stock!

This isn't a pronunciation thing-- just freakin' hilarious:
a sponsor's name in a list was spelled

Duncan Donuts

dang-- that still makes me laff.

Ha! No doubt Mrs. Donuts is certainly proud of her boy Duncan. He makes a mean lemon-filled pastry to boot...

Well, da grammar cops will tell ya "over" refers to height and age. "More than" refers to quantity. But I'm sure I'm preachin' to da choir.

Yep. Choir here.

We're sticklers for "fewer" (instead of "less" for a quantity) and the excising of the unnecessary word "located" in the phrase "located at".

That is actually correct in some instances. I can't tell you what the distinction is because I've blocked it, and loads of other trivia, out of my memory since leaving the field of copyediting years ago.

I'm guessing, howver, that most of the copywriters who use it are not doing it out of a devotion to purity of language.

Ah yes. It could have been worse. It could have been conveniently located. And I'm sure it has been.

And while I'm at it, it amazes me how many people think could've means could of.

I've actually been of the assumption that between only meant between two things, but then I went to Merriam Webster's site and found this definition (shortened to get to the point):

Quote:
1 a : by the common action of : jointly engaging <shared the work between the two of them> <talks between the three -- Time> b : in common to : shared by <divided between his four grandchildren>

(Yada yada yada then....)

Quote:
usage: There is a persistent but unfounded notion that between can be used only of two items and that among must be used for more than two. Between has been used of more than two since Old English; it is especially appropriate to denote a one-to-one relationship, regardless of the number of items. It can be used when the number is unspecified <economic cooperation between nations>, when more than two are enumerated <between you and me and the lamppost> <partitioned between Austria, Prussia, and Russia -- Nathaniel Benchley>, and even when only one item is mentioned (but repetition is implied) <pausing between every sentence to rap the floor -- George Eliot>. Among is more appropriate where the emphasis is on distribution rather than individual relationships <discontent among the peasants>. When among is automatically chosen for more than two, English idiom may be strained <a worthy book that nevertheless falls among many stools -- John Simon> <the author alternates among mod slang, clichés and quotes from literary giants -- A. H. Johnston>.

Just BETWEEN you, me, and the lamp post, I thought I'd share this AMONG you all.
