Hi all, your opinions requested on microphones here in the booth - Got my demo session w Nancy Wolfson coming up and curious as to what y'all think sounds good here. Is it...Mic #1, Or is it...Mic #2? Did some normal volume, some stupid - er, louder stuff and a bit of room/noise floor. No settings were changed.

Thanks a ton!

Hey Chris,
On my iPad, I have to say that mic #1 has a lot more body to it. My #2 sounds a good deal thinner to me. So, my vote is for mic #1.

Mic 2 sounds a tiny bit cleaner and more realistic to me. Otherwise they're fine.

I downloaded your "track" and looked at the frequency response of the two mics. The bass on mic2 starts to fall off at about 110 hertz while mic1 does not fall off until about 85 hertz. That is the difference most of us hear. In the voice business (starting with the radio business) there has always been this "lust" for the so-called "ballsy" sound... lot's of bass. The taper off of the bass is pretty significant. If you like other features of mic2, you might be able to boost the frequencies in the 90 to 110 hertz via EQ.
Mic 2 has a very nice gentle higher frequency trend that probably gives it the "cleaner, realistic" sound described by the previous post.
You may find that trying to give mic2 a small boost in the area of 100 hertz is a lot more practical than trying to give mic1 a boost from 4k hz all the way up to infinity. I find efforts to do boost at high frequency at lot more troublesome than a bit of low frequency extra juice.
When you consider the amount of listening done via headsets and earplugs in this era, the importance of extended low frequency may not be as critical as our tradition has been. |

All excellent feedback. One mic cost 1/10 of the other. Thanks for the time spent listening & analyzing! Lots of potential having both these in the "closet". Appreciate it! _________________ Chris Mezzolesta, Voice Talent

Hei Chris,
Can't give you any technical reasons but I preferred Mic no. 1.
Will be interesting to hear which mics they are!
All the best,

I would suggest setting them both up and record your demo at the same time with both. Send each mic's file separately. That way Nancy can decide which she likes better for a particular track. One may sound better than another on a particular read allowing her to a diversity of sound to choose and incorporate. |

Interesting prospect Eddie...I already got the suggestion from her engineer as we were testing Source Connect to stay on my current mic, otherwise I would have tried that. Perhaps if I can find a way to get the other mic into my own setup on another channel in the preamp (not sure, it's switchable front OR rear) I'll do that...otherwise I guess I'll trust them.... _________________ Chris Mezzolesta, Voice Talent

Nice that no one dissed either mic! Mic 1 is the Neumann TLM-103. Mic 2 is the AKG Perception 220. Thanks again for listening and commenting! Demo session went fine, look forward to the final mix they send me. Cheers.... _________________ Chris Mezzolesta, Voice Talent
