There seems to be a large selection of Sennheiser 416 fakes up on EBay recently, all pricing below $500. All reports are that these a are knock-offs, hard to detect

Heads up

If the price is ridiculously low AND the seller is in China, be very careful.

(not China-bashing here, but I checked out the allegedly bogus ebay postings, and in almost all cases the seller was in China and the prices were about half what a 416 normally sells for)

FORTUNATELY they are apparently allowing refunds to any disgruntled buyers since they don't want to get flagged by ebay

I got a knockoff Shure SM58 on eBay a long time ago, and it was terrible. Guess they have come a long way on the reverse engineering process for mics. If I can find one for under $200 maybe I'll get it...just to test it out and see how it sounds compared to the real one. I'm good friends with a Senn/Neumann rep who could get me a demo.

I couldn't speak to these knock-off 416's, but the Chinese are getting known for making some very decent kit. The SE line of mics were cheap and good last I looked.

Maybe it's a real used one? The exchange rate between us and them makes it good deal for them? Or we can go by the old, "too good to be true" philosophy.

No matter what, even in this modern world of communication and shipping I'd have a real hard time buying anything pricey direct from a country like that.

I bought a pair of Sony MDR 7506 headphones about a year ago on Ebay new.....a pretty good deal. from Hong Kong.. I've used them daily and out of curiousity Googled "fake Sony MDR 7506" and sure enough, these are knock offs...

either way, it's illegal to put another companies name on a product..

George stated on EWABS 3 weeks ago, that he had a friend that bought one for $500.00 from china, checked out the serial out with Sennheiser, and it checked out.
I have seen the listings, and the paperwork, looks like the real thing.
I don't think the mic's are knock offs!

I've seen those listings, too, and wondered.

Bruce, I tested an SE mic a while back and liked it so much I bought it, so the chinese aren't completely doing knock-offs.

I just received the 416 I bought yesterday, I got it for an obscenely low price. However it was from a studio in Boise, ID. I'm looking forward to plugging it in and having some fun!

Not to be a drag but serial numbers are just on housing not the electronics inside.

There definitely might be real ones coming from China, but there are absolutely fakes. I have read on other forums (not VO forums Smile ) that people have scored these mics for $150, and thought they were broken because they didn't sound like the 416 they were replacing. Sent them to Sennheiser, who then told them they were counterfeit. Guess it is just a buyer beware situation. If you want to take the chance, just know what you are getting into.

Personally, I want to hear a 415 vs 416 shootout. Anyone have a 416 they wanna send over to Don for a quick test? cool
