Few weeks ago I conducted a test, but blew it right out of the water by not knowing how to work the Gefell MT71s. I have been eating the Sennheiser for so long, I forgot how to treat a classy microphone with respect.

So I will provide a sample with no processing at all. Wanted to say thank you to the microphone pros who knew the signature of the 416, as well as the Gefell, but due to operator error could not specificly pin-point the MT71s.

It does have that Legendary M7 capsule that does confuse people, well the pros (Frank and Bob) really that know Microphones.

I find it EXCELLENT that you would put up an unprocessed file like this. I love hearing what other VO artists recording environments REALLY sound like.

In your recording you said "the levels are the same." Do you mean you adjusted the levels to match? I have both mics and just compared them (by coincidence today). I found the 416 approx. 6db lower in volume than the Gefell.

I'm still getting what I consider a kind of "harshness" with my 416. In the back of my mind I'm feeling I need to send it off to get checked out. I bought it used, and it looks like it's definitely seen better days..

Also...for samples like you left. I'm sure no one would object to your even linking to .Wav or Aiff files uncompressed. Those would not be that big for a short sample.

Once again....Happy to get this file. I love being able to bring it into Sound Forge and actually SEE what's going on.

Clutter,

I did not touch or adjust the level at all, the distance from the Mic's is the only difference. I was closer to the 416 typical 3 inches, but the levels are close with no adjustment. I have been working on trusting the gain and not implementing the processing that have been doing, I am getting use to it.

Thank you for responding, what Gefell do you have, you can't have the same combo...that would be strange considering!

I have the Gefell M71
Sennheiser MKH416P48

I don't see anything about an "s" on my Gefell. Frankly, I don't know if there is a difference between the M71 and the MT71s or if it's the same mic. Gefell doesn't have a mention of "only" the M71 anywhere on their website.

Frankly, I bought it so many years ago I don't remember any other designation for it. (However it looks exactly like what is on your website)

OH...and I also have a Lawson L47 (The original Gold version)

I run them through a Grace 101 and more recently, I dug out my old original DBX 286 (before the "a") when I acquired the 416.

M71 is older-no longer made in fact. And it has a transformer.

Wow, thank you guys, starting to think no one likes me from the few responses I get. It's great to see some feedback.

One thing I would like to say is that Frank has tough me a new appreciation for the sound by not adding the essence of what I think is cool. I have thought that my little dab of sweetening (I mean very, very, very, very, little) to the file would enhance the sound. I have gotten used to running around in the nude with no processing at all, I now have a better appreciation for the design of the actual microphone.

It’s now up to the engineer to make me sound cool!!!!

After listening to the recording, I must confess that the day prior to the sample I had some dental work done, and new temporary bridge, and boy talking was like an obstacle course, took some effort to work some of the words. I went back today after some issues to put in another temp for the next 8 weeks due to the fact that I could not produce any VO (plus the bridge cracked) . Could not even say “The LEVELS” had so much of a lisp. Boy what we take for granted on the shape of our teeth. It was hard to say it “Pretty Clean” so the Moral of the story is, take care of the choppers my friends…a little change could set you back a little. Sorry for the side bar, my dental change was selective, a decision based on a future movie project, but a simple change could knock you out of commission. Sorry to get personal, but I thought it was a subject that I would share, and had seen a post about this same subject 4 years ago, and thought ya right, not me buddy!

This reminded me...

An associate of mine that I consider one of the most talented VO talents that I know personally, had his wisdom teeth removed. During the procedure he suffered some nerve damage in his jaw which left him sounding like a stroke patient.. I'm not sure if he ever recovered, since I haven't heard from him since. Fortunately, he had already formed a production company that used other voice talent. So....at least he was still able to make a living. But still...

Evidently, it's a commonly know risk of Wisdom Teeth Extraction.

I recently had some work done, and had some whistling on my S's. That wasn't probably as tough to fix, but I feel your pain (in part). It's tough to change technique to compensate for a differently shaped mouth!

I hear ya brother.

So often I get caught up in playing with the hardware and toys in post for a client or demo that I forget how wonderful and pure the natural sound of a good mic and pre are. I should get reminded more often. It is the reason I bought my Paintpot in the first place.

I had an interesting revelation the other day. As most of you may know I just jumped on the 416 bandwagon. So the first thing I do is audition the 416 naked through every preamp I have. OMG Hands down the most telling microphone as to a preamps quality and color I have ever heard. It blew me away. It didn't tell me anything I didn't already know about the pre's but the difference between them was much more apparent.

I often inform folks that I have a great gig; I can go to work in my underwear! I know it doesn't draw a pretty picture but....

As for naked mic sounds: if a producer wants you to change the sound he/she hears when speaking to you on the phone or via VOIP, then expect him to tell you. If he/she doesn't say it, don't do it!

A microphone has been designed to reproduce sound and a good or great VO microphone captures the best possible reproduction of your voice. Don't taint it with processing. Even a preamp oftentimes has color, so be cautious of the paint your voice is covered with.

Bob, would you be kind enough to post a review on the results of your test.
I would assume the PaintPot would be the best, but we know what we get when we assume. As I understand the MSS -10 is close to the PaintPot as far as no color.

I know that the most awesome equipment will not enhance your talent, i am working with a coach on that. I would like to get the cleanest sound as I can.

Can do Bill. Anything in particular you want to know?

I don't know much about the Martech MSS 10 other than what I have read. On paper the Paintpot specs are superior.

I will warn you ahead of time, my equipment with the exception of some microphones are not very mainstream.... an eclectic mix but it works for me.

Gonna be a couple of weeks for sound files of the 416 if you want them. The 416T PSC power adapter I bought last week from B & H crapped out yesterday and is being returned for a replacement. Ground mail from west to east coast and back is going to take some time.

Promise I won't threadjack and will start a new topic. Smile
