…but whatever it is, I like it.
I've been dealing with some bothersome liveness in my recording space and not really having the budget to buy stuff like OC703 or rockwool, etc. So over the last couple weeks, I started thinking about what materials I had on hand that might provide acoustic treatment at a comparatively low cost. Then I started looking at ways to deploy those materials. Then, after a few days of worrying about what if I screwed the project up, I sucked it up and just WENT FOR IT. A few things I've had to buy, but quite a lot of it I've been able to harvest from my own closets to bring in here.
Now I have a huge tapestry hung on one wall, more foam deployed on another, a ton of great new carpet and rug materials laid out and hung, and I am ready to hang another large piece on the opposite wall tomorrow afternoon. I also have the materials on hand to hang some more acoustical treatment from the ceiling, which I plan to do tomorrow as well.
I've already had comments that the space sounds better even without the new carpet and today's/tomorrow's wall and ceiling hangings. So I'm pretty darned excited about finally getting all these new steps completed! Now I'm really looking forward to doing some more recording in here.
Besides all that I"m just feeling really proud of myself for taking on this big project and pretty much kicking ass with it (if I do say so myself)!! Go, me!!
Anyway - I just had to share. Thanks for humoring my excitement about it all. _________________ jen@jengosnell.com

Good for you, Jen! Isn't it a great feeling to finally motivate yourself to do something that you KNOW for a long time you needed to do? I have a half dozen similar projects like that around my house that, perhaps, one day I'll get started on, too.
And you confirmed what I found out. You don't HAVE to spend thou$$and$ of dollar$ to get a decent sound in your room. I purchased several $30 comforters from WalMart and hung them on my walls and they worked wonders. _________________ Scott R. Pollak

i'm finding that sometimes the fear i have of doing something and it being wrong is worse than the actual results i end up with after i give it a shot.
good for you for going for it! how about a picture of your new colorful space?

In the back seat of my car are four furniture blankets that I bought at Harbor Freight for about 5 or 6 bucks apiece. They will be the first items I deploy once I get my new booth built.
One thing I would suggest before you continue to add carpet and other stuff to your space: if it sounds good now, stop. No need to add everything you gathered up, just because you have it on hand and it was free. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Lee, you beat me to the Harbor Freight moving blankets. Works great. Now have to make room and rearrange space for my 5 x 5 whisperroom. Got it used for $300 from a friend in the video biz. Felt like a thief. _________________ Gregory Best

Thanks, you guys! I am glad that anything I post may be of help or inspiration to anyone else. Todd, your grandpa was right on the mark. I find it weird that seemingly, some VO advice that I got regarding my demos translated into the motivation to finally GO FOR IT and tackle this project. But I'm not complaining.
And I will humor your request, Scott (perhaps I should call you Dusty to differentiate from Scott P?….. well, maybe I'll just stick with Scott L ). Here are pics of my hodgepodge treatment of my 11x11 room. (The only thing I didn't take a good pic of is the windows on the north wall, but you can get a glimpse of the curtains in the ceiling shot. They're heavy cotton.)
Closet doors (South wall) (auralex)
West wall (furry animal pelts with wool/cashmere backing. The pelts are from guanacos, which are llama-like and native to southern Argentina and Chile.)
West wall 2
"Booth" (auralex)
Ceiling (auralex and down comforter)
East wall (comforter and throw rug)
Door (strip of pile carpet next to it)
So what isn't covered? Right now I have about 65% of a naked ceiling, mostly on the S/SE/SW areas of the room, naked walls at the corner where the N and E walls adjoin, naked door, and small naked areas above the door, closet doors, and windows. I have a couple little squares of bare wood floor by the door and the West wall, but that's it.
At this point I'm thinking I'm gonna live with this for a while and see if anything else leaps out as desperately needing to be treated. I'm doubting that, but you never know. But if one of you guys has a strong opinion that something currently left naked should be treated, I'll at least listen.
You know, the funny thing is that all this started because I got mad that the guanaco pelt which I love so much and had fitted for a queen bed had instead been sitting wrapped up in a closet (it was too insulating for my husband to tolerate sleeping under, and also a bit fragile to handle toddler invasions and wrangling). I really wanted to be able to enjoy it and couldn't figure out how, till now. Now it sits right behind my desk and I get to look at it and smile and it actually makes me WANT to sit at my desk for a change! _________________ jen@jengosnell.com
