|
|
Anyone have a preference between roxul rockboard and safe n sound? The Rockboard is a bit more expensive but looks like it would a bit easier to handle (no crumbling).
Also, I saw on youtube where a guy had incorporated airspace within the frame itself by putting in (what he called) wooden "cleats" to hold the Rockboard away from the wall.. What you ended up with is an enclosed airspace behind the material. Any opinions on whether this would be as effective as simply spacing your material away from the wall and leaving it open? Or, would that make any difference?
It seemed like a rather elegant solution to the whole "airspace: issue.
Just trying to measure twice....and cut once.
Thanks.

I recently moved my studio from one room to another. All my existing treatment was OC703 in frames (either 2x4 batts, or "superchunks" for the corners). Each of the individual batts were framed by 4x1 planking, effectively using a 2" air-gap behind a 2" thickness of OC703. These stiffer panes were easy to work with. I covered the framed batts with burlap.
In the new room, I used all the existing OC703, but I had a 4x4 walk-in which I decided to make into a recording area (not a booth, it's open-backed). For this I framed it out with 2x4 spacers, and then mounted a second frame over that. I then used safe'n'sound for my main insulation in this area between the studs... effectively giving an air-gap behind the insulation. The safe'n'sound is certainly floppier and more difficult to work with... but I bought 16" batts, and set my studs tight so that the safe'n'sound wedged in nicely and is self-supporting. _________________ Bish a.k.a. I used Bonded Logic's denim insulation both in the walls and in the panels and cloud, It's such an enclosed space, and I'm in there 8 hours a day, that I was unwilling to risk my health breathing in the nasty fumes from the Roxul.
And very very pleased with the result. _________________ Dangerous.

+1 on the recycled denim! no off-gassing of any kind. i hung mine with a french cleat plus a spacer of the same thickness at the bottom so i have a 1" stand off from the wall. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

I could see how using the recycled denim would be a good thing on several different levels. But, I think we are also talking about a product that is 4x the price. (give or take)
My question would be to those who HAVE used the Roxul products. Have YOU noticed any out-gassing? The only hazard I can find officially is a warning about possible superficial lung or skin irritation from breathing or touching the fibers during installation. _________________ "I reserve the right to be completely wrong." |

I think the denim stuff was $63 for 73 sf in my market (St Louis).
Roxul Safe n Sound is $47 for 59 sf.

Hmmm. That's sound better than the figures I found. I see that with denim they talk about "bags"....is this stuff totally loose? _________________ "I reserve the right to be completely wrong." |

If I can find the denim stuff locally (didn't see it on my recent visits to either the orange or blue Borg), I'll use that. Otherwise, I'm going with the Safe 'n Sound batts. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
