I used to travel with a rig a lot ... then decided not to ... and now I'm wanting to have a set-up again.
I need a laptop that will be used primarily for recording (Adobe Audition) and editing, with Internet access for sending files. Were you I, where might you start researching , that leads to a purchase decision? Or, maybe you can just tell me what to get and I'll do that. Seems *quiet* is the first priority, and speed. Likely I'll use my M or Focusrite iTrack, primarily for Vox Studio, and for auditions and other gigs that pop up while I'm away from the main frame.
Thanks in advance for telling me what I need to know! _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

Hey Diane. If I were looking for what you describe, I'd by a small used XP or WIN 7 laptop off Craigslist. Preferably from a local shop. Avoid Windows 8 for this purpose. People are selling these things dirt cheap and for AA recording and email, they're perfectly fine. You could probably find one for $100. _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

Bill, thank you! I always go to my local classifieds when I'm searching for things, or selling things (such as the new twin box spring and a couple of nearly-new junior nordic ski boots -- takers anyone??!!). In this case, thinking about the research on and purchase of a new laptop, it hadn't occurred to me to do that. Here I go! _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. I agree. Neither audio recording nor internet surfing is a particularly demanding application for a computer that is less than 10 years old. I have a Dell D610 Latitude laptop that I use for my "road rig" that I bought used several years ago for less than $250 and it is more than adequate for the task. It's also pretty quiet.
The company I bought mine from (KeyLynx) evolved from the Pratt & Whitney Surplus Store and sold computers that were taken out of service from P&W. They are currently selling the D630 for $189. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

They have fallen out of favor with everyone trying to sell us tablets, but the netbooks are lightweight, powerful enough, have at least two USB ports, etc.
The fan on my Acer Aspire One is very quiet- presumably will run quieter with an SSD installed. Nice touch on the keyboard, too. Record and edit with AA or Audacity with hardly ever a glitch. |

I use an ASUS netbook when I'm on the road and need to record and send something. _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

Look for a used Sony z series or Samsung... Core i5 or i7... Quiet fans and power saving modes that will slow the fans even further. Make sure you get at least two USB 2 ports and a USB 3 for good measure. Win 7 preferred... The drivers you'll need are pretty stable on win7. For a really quiet rig, swap in an SSD for the hard drive.

I also have an Acer Aspire One, which I use with the Focusrite 2i2. No problems so far. Bought mine from Acer's eBay store. Lightweight & decent battery life, which should improve even more once I get around to buying an SSD drive. _________________ John LaPiana

My 5 year old Dell Mini 10 is fanless and with the SSD also silent. It's very slow compared to my Samsung Galaxy S3, can barely play Youtube, and chokes on Skype video chat a bit, but records audio just dandy. Happy ebay hunting!
(My laptop of choice for Mac/Windows OS is a used Macbook Air 11", found for under $800). _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

George, I dropped one of those at the DI yesterday(regional thrift/goodwill store). I could never get it to play well, as it was a refurb and a T-Mobile alert always interfered. And, sooooo slooooow.
You ALL! Thank you for the keen advice, the specifics, the kudos (Bill). I've been looking around for something used and all the above information helps me hone in!
Because I rely on Vox Studio (a teleprompter-like file recording/slicing software) I'm pretty sure I need a true laptop (though I'm looking forward to getting the camera kit adapter thing to try the iPad with the M or Focusrite just because ...) _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Good suggestion, George. Lenovo has developed new fan technology that is considerably quieter. They redesigned the fan blades to minimize noise while increasing airflow. Only on 2013 and newer models. _________________ Don Brookshire
