Three references to this commercial for auditions in two days time... I see a (short term?) trend a comin':

Bryan Cranston voicing Apple's new iPad spot, "Pencil".

I just watched the series "Big History" on H2. Cranston narrated and did a nice job. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

He's one of the finest actors working today in my opinion. The violence and immorality on Breaking Bad was hard to take, but his amazing Heisenberg maneuvers kept me watching through the end. And having seen him on Fallon's show, it turns out he's a really nice guy too.

Bryan Cranston is a voiceover triple-threat - he is a fine actor, has a distinctive voice full of character, and is a celebrity so he attracts the big projects
Why would an agency producer work with Joe "workaday" Voiceactor when he could hang with Bryan Cranston? _________________ Graeme Spicer

I love a lot of the stuff he's done...but the auditions will probably shift towards whatever is the best voice over during the SuperBowl. What will be this years, "...so God made a farmer."? |

I see a lot of celebrity sound alike requests. What I also see is crappy copy
Bryan Cranston couldn't make work!
I'd say interesting, well written copy is a shade more important than the voice.
Most ad agencies aren't very original. Just asking for an Al Pacino sound alike ain't gonna bring their intern written copy alive. _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

Bryan Cranston and James Earl and Sam Elliott, and your favorite... Could all read a phone book... And get a compelling performance out of it.
Witness the latest Sprint campaign.
I don't begrudge these guys, or Sam Jackson or even Morgan Freeman. They earned it. And they deliver.
I just hope I can deliver that kind of performance in MY voice.
I'm working on it. _________________ Don Brookshire

I'm not sure about that. I suspect there's a fair amount of crappy copy that Bryan Cranston could make work. But it doesn't necessarily take a Bryan Cranston. I am confident a significant number of us who populate the VO-BB could do so, as well. I take a fair amount of pride in the fact that over the years I have turned a lot of chicken shite into chicken salad.
If all scripts were well crafted, maybe a lot of the people who think they can do what we do, really could. The challenge is to make any script sound good. And I believe a lot of us are up to that challenge. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

There's no doubt those celebrity voices could make any copy sound better.
My point is the lower tier agencies are not actually hiring those people, they want people who sound like them. Not always a good substitute for the real thing. _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

This is true. But what makes these celebrities make even bad copy sound good is not that they are celebrities, but that they are good actors. My point was, celebrities are not the only good actors.
But you are correct; what many people are seeking is the superficial element (i.e. the sound) rather than the thing that actually makes the commercials they are copying resonate: the acting. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

They probably have the ability to voice an opinion on bad copy. Cranston continuously mentions his mindset of only trying to get projects with good writing. |

Oh No! They just released a new ad:
http://youtu.be/jiyIcz7wUH0
Give it a few weeks, and we'll all be asked to do a read in the voice of Robin Williams. God help us all!
cheers,

Well, it was compelling. It's the pacing. The little nuances. And the nice copy.
Takes you back to VO 101 - it's not about the voice. It's about what you do with the words - and it sure helps when the words are great.... _________________ Playing for a living...
