So, you may remember me asking about buying an Apogee Mic to pair with my iPad for a small travel rig...? Well, I've just gone back and reviewed all your sage advice on those threads, and I'm ready to pull the trigger...
But, of course, I have a few final questions. {sigh} Sorry.
1) Does it come with anything but the mic? Like, a stand, or cables, or a case? If it doesn't, do I need any of those things (well, I know I need a stand...)
2) Is the pop-filter a necessity?
3) I see that I've waited so long that there's now a newer Apogee Mic 96K for $30 more... Is it $30+ better, or do I not bother...?
Help me with these final questions, and I SWEAR I'll buy the stupid thing, already. We're leaving for the beach in a few weeks, and I've gotta git'er done... _________________ Always look on the bright side of life.

Hi Kristin, I just bought a Mic 96k a couple days ago so I might be able to help here. The Mic (both versions) comes with a tripod desk mount and the compatible cables to connect to whatever idevice you're plugging it into but no case. Apogee does sell a travel case for it separately for about $20.00. Pop filter? Yes, but the small size of the Mic might make that solution a bit of a challenge. I still don't know how I'm going to solve that one. Is the 96k worth the extra money? Well, if you have a newer IPad with the lightning connector then I'd say yes since the 96k comes with a lightning cable, the standard Mic does not. Buying the cheaper mic and the cable separately will run about the same or a little more cost wise. But, if you have an iPad with the 30 pin connector, I'd say save the $30.00 and get the standard one. That's my 2 cents. Enjoy! _________________ "Be grateful, be happy, work a little harder." |

Rob, apparently I wasn't born with the GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) gene... such a handicap...
Ben -- thank you! That's exactly what I need to know... so buying the mic gets me the stand and cable, and I would need to get a case and pop filter on my own.
And my iPad is at least a year old -- how do I tell which connector I need...? _________________ Always look on the bright side of life.

I don't know if it's the same for the iPad, but the newer iPhone connector is now thin instead of the wide one on the older models. I'm uploading a pic of the new connector now...will post shortly. _________________ Back into the murky lurk from whence I came

Sorry the image is so big, but the older, 30-pin connector is on the left, and the newer, Lightning connector is on the right.

OK, the smaller one, the lightning connector, is what we use to charge the iPad... so that's what I need to connect to the mic, too, yes...? _________________ Always look on the bright side of life.

I have the older MiC 48k that came with the 30 pin (wide) ipad connector. A year later when I bought my new iPad Air I also bought the Apple 30 pin to 9 pin adaptor for $30, a ridiculous amount of money, but what are you going to do? Additionally the MiC came with a USB connector for use with a PC. Also a cute little mic stand. I purchased the mic case direct from Apogee, and an indispensable little pop screen from Hook; if you buy either of the Apogee MiCs for voice work you will be lost without this pop screen
I've gone on the Apogee website in the last 3 mos and made note of the new MiC 96k that comes with the 9 pin adaptor in the box. You can also buy the 9 pin adaptor separately, but I see no need since I already own the 30-9 pin adaptor from Apple. Personally I also see no need to upgrade to the new MiC 96k. That said the 96k is only $229; when I bought my 48k it was $200.
When I'm on the road I make a point of asking my clients how the sound is with this mic. In almost two years I've had no complaints whatsoever.
Forgot to mention, the Apogee MiC works only with IOS and OSX...iPad, iPhone, Mac computers.
