Briefly, the obvious answer is: the agent had too many non-union clients (likely).

Union representation can be good if you use it to your advantage. AFTRA/SAG and the other unions offer great benefits for those who have the need and desire.

Non-union means that you forgo retirement plans, medical plans, etc. and choose to create these for yourself. by yourself.

Either way you have some decisions to make. Is the Union right for you? Do you have enough union clients to sustain you by joining? And, all the other things you may have already reviewed in your mind.

Tom-- they may simply not be calling anybody back, period.
It may have nothing whatever to do with your union status.

Hard to tell.

Who knows.
You could always ask!

I didn't join the unions until I had to.

You don't lose any work doing it that way-- at least I didn't.

It's pointless to even attempt to figure out why they do or don't do anything. You're job is to just keep on pluggin' away (i.e., marketing, and all the other stuff we mention here). There are SO many factors that have nothing to do with YOU when it comes to both obtaining representation and/or getting cast.

Any contact is always a positive.

What Anthony said. They may call you tomorrow. Or next month. Don't assume you're vox non grata just yet.

Last summer I did some work for a company as a prototype for a museum exhibit. The producers were going to meet with the client on date X and one of the agenda items was whether I would be the voice for the final product. Day came and went and I never heard from them again. I assumed that meant I didn't pass muster and filed the incident under "Whatev". They emailed me last week that they would be contacting me "sometime this year" to do the final product. This kind of thing happens constantly in this business. You just have to accept that their concept of time has nothing to do with yours, espcially in reference to things you want right now - it is of utmost importance to you but is every day stuff to them.

Yeah-- I did an audition for a tourism company and got the gig, and then waited nearly a year for the actual sessions to begin. Did stuff with them for about a year and then *poof!*
Haven't heard from them since December.
Easy come, easy go.

or in winter in New England: icy come, icy go.

Here's another one (since we're telling stories to help you out):

In July of 2005 I sent out a mailer with a then-updated CD demo. One of the agents that called me back asked that I drop by to chat. After our "interview/chat" I never heard from her again.

This year, I sent my updated demo (I believe it was April or May) and got a call from her about a week later to send me out on an audition. Since then she's sent me out several times and even has called with bookings (no audition required - including the recent Maxell/X Games spot) plus we speak just about every single week sometimes 3 or more times. About a month ago she asked me, "Hey, Anthony, have we ever met?"

Goes to show that this is truly their "everyday" business just like Mary said.

Which brings up another point. Even if you don't "ever" hear from them again, schedule regular updates so you stay in their mind. One of those updates may well stimulate something good.
