I imagine this is for the lower 48 states... killer deal, though. I wonder what Sennheiser thinks of it? I am sure they just want more 416's out there and to stem the used/counterfeit 416 market.

I'd been procrastinating about a 416 for a year or more. This was too good to miss... reputable dealer, best price, free shipping and no tax. They're out of stock after a rush (go figure)... mine should be drop shipped from Sennheiser in a week of so... which puts me a million miles away from worrying about a Chinese knock-off Smile

Now I'm have an internal conflict. I use a mic that sounds gold on my voice and no one has ever complained about...but I've wanted to get a 416 for a while because it is a standard sound that everyone loves. I am having a hard time justifying the expense (even at a killer price). Is it worth the brand recognition? Will a higher level producer be more willing to work with someone just because of the brand name on their gear?

In a word, no. I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I've been asked what microphone I'm using (with fingers left over) in 31 years of professional voiceover work. And never has anyone suggested that they were unwilling to work with me based on my microphone choice.

I've had people ask about my chain because it's a great, clean sounding chain, but I've never had someone say, 'You use a Senn 416... you're hired!'.

On the other hand I've worked with production houses that have heard of them, but never used them and some that are not familiar with them at all.

And once I talked a friend into trying one, and he ended up buying one.

The best thing for you to do Jason, is rent one. I rented one twice before I bought. They do have a unique sound. Some have described it as sounding like it almost has a built in compressor. It doesn't. But it can, and does, offer a quality that cuts through a bed and puts your voice right in front. But again, the only way to experience that is to experience it.

Rent or borrow one. It will answer all your questions.

The reason I want one isn't because it's the in thing or because all the cool kids have them, but because a studio I've been recording at for years -- mostly into a U87 -- switched things up one time and mic'd me with a 416 and the way the piece came out blew me away.

It really isn't gearitis...it's I want to have the best sounding studio I possibly can. I don't expect to book more gigs because of a mic...but I am always open to a better sounding product. I'm willing to spend money if I can improve my product, whether it be coaching, or a new demo, or new gear, or new website design, or new marketing...if it ultimately results in a better product, it CAN be money well spent...depending on the real return.

How do you measure the ROI of a small improvement in the overall product you deliver? They return may be tiny, but over time, those incremental improvements can result in a product that is superior to my competitors...which could definitely get me the gig.

Guess it depends on how busy you are, and how quickly your 416 starts to go south.

If you're very busy and your 416 goes completely south in one fell swoop, it would be good to have a spare on hand.

I'm considering whether that might not be a good idea....esp at $200 off. Inoccent
