That all sounds about right.

I'm in Miami, with monthly ISDN right around $400 (including taxes, fees, etc).

But this is the first I'm hearing of something this specific:

No surprise, really, and I'm guessing that alternatives will be the norm (and that I will have given up my ISDN lines) long before 2019.

As much as I complain about Verizon, I can't complain about Verizon ISDN in NYC/NNJ. $60 per month, easy to reach the right people and solid reliability.

Even with Dave Immer's Special Workaround™?

Mine from AT&T is still $138 a month, but I know the other shoe could drop at any time.

Holding steady at $233 here for over a year.

I keep waiting for it to blow up too.

Problem is, I'm using it more than ever now.

Well with a half-day wasted on the phone last week with the beloved phone company I have decided to pull the plug on my ISDN. One of the many Customer No Service reps I was passed to got a little testy with me on the phone when I asked why my rates were raised over $60 this last time around. He said and I quote, "..because we are trying to phase ISDN out. That is why your rates were raised." He obviously has dealt with unhappy customers besides me. SO the rumors of ISDN being phased out completely over the next 5-6 years are true in my opinion. Mine will be shut off on 7/9. Will be a sad day for sure but I am relieved at the fact that I no longer have to deal with this company. I will be selling my 4 year old lightly-used, Musicam Road Warrior LC IP/ISDN codec unit, which is in excellent condition, very soon. PM or email me if you are in the market for a solid used unit. $1700 with free shipping in the U.S. Once I get some pics taken and dig out the packaging it came in I will post in the gear section. Thanks!

Glenn

Lee's totally unsolicited sales advice:

People who are trying to sell off their no longer needed ISDN boxes should probably not preface the announcement of availability by adding to the preponderance of anecdotal evidence of the impending obsolescence of said equipment. Wink

I get your point Lee but in some areas of the country it will probably be a lot longer than 5-6 years. Again, it is speculation at this point. I should probably clarify that I was referring to what I have been told in my area of the Midwest. Some folks are paying around 100 bucks or less a month like on the West coast. So for someone like this they will get a lot of out this unit for several years to come. Thanks!

Glenn

one good ISDN gig will cover the cost of that ISDN unit.

It's something I often repeat, but my first ISDN gig paid for the box, the Verizon installation fees and the line rental for the first eighteen months.

I should add that I was very happy to pick up a spare box from someone on VO-BB who was unfortunately in an area where the costs were going up and his maintaining the ISDN option did not pass a cost/benefit analysis.

I hate to be vulture-like, but if anyone plans to keep their ISDN service for a few more years, then help a fellow VO-BBer out and buy their surplus equipment... a spare unit can be worth its weight in gold.
