My brother-in-law was admitted to hospital last week and has discovered he has cancer of both the liver and lung. Obviously is would foolish of me to understate how serious this is for him and how distressing for the family.
I saw Douglas on Saturday at his home and he told me the full story of what happened and when. He described how under local anaesthetic the consultant took a biopsy from his liver.
Doctor "This is going very well, I've managed to collect 3 good pieces. I'll go in for another".
Douglas "Are you trying to get enough for a casserole?" |

Banksey-your family is in my thoughts and prayers. My Dad is dealing with lung cancer for the third time. Not easy on anyone. Thank goodness your brother-in-law has such a great sense of humor, it will serve him very well during this next phase of his journey |

I'll put his name on our prayer list this Sunday... and we'll also be praying for the doctors. _________________ "Bailey"

Thanks for all the good thoughts and positive vibes. We're under no illusions here about what is the most likely outcome yet remain optimistic.
Even if the body is beaten the same will never be true of the man and his spirit. |

My mother died of cancer of the esophagus on September 19th of last year....her doctor said six months max, with or without chemo...she chose no chemo and enjoyed her last days, thanks in large part to Hospice, which I can't say enough good things about... |

Banksey, I'm very sorry to hear about Douglas, He's lucky to have you...and his sense of humor. Having gone thru a long difficult illness myself I can tell you, it's the only thing that saved me. What's that old adage? You either have to laugh or cry...laughing is better...well, something like that anyway. And you're right, regardless of what happens with his body - his Spirit will live on forever. You and your family will be in my prayers.

Banksey, I'm sorry to hear about your brother-in-law's illness. It is good that he still has his sense of humor. My dad has bone marrow cancer & is about to explore Hospice...so I feel like I may understand what your family is going through. Will keep you all in my prayers. _________________ Mary |

Philip,
My prayers are with you and your family as well. Indeed, I see several members of this board who are now or will soon be facing some wrenching times.
And I agree that a good sense of humor is a vital part of staying well as long as possible. Clearly Douglas has that knocked. _________________ Be well,

What else is a close-knit community for, than the support we can all muster when one of "us" needs it?
If my wife -- a hospice nurse -- was there, she'd make a big pot of Minestrone and bring it over. But since the distance is great, fire away with questions if you need, and she'd be happy to offer simple layman answers to complicated medical issues....and, of course you're on the prayer list at our church.

Philip,
I'm very sorry about Douglas. I lost 2 aunts and an uncle to cancer and it's very sad indeed. It's wonderful that he has kept his sense of humor. Being gloomy isn't going to change the course of things...why not make it as pleasant as possible. I am thinking about you and your family and have you all in my prayers. _________________ TG2

Good for him! Half of these nasty battles are fought through the mind and spirit. It shows he's got the best of both, we'll keep a good thought for him. _________________ - Peter
