Hi all, I have an opportunity to to pick up one of these at a good price and am wondering if anyone has any firsthand experience with one. This is not the NT1-A. It's the newest model, released last year. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! _________________ "Be grateful, be happy, work a little harder." |

The original Rode NT1 was designed by Jim Williams of Audio Upgrades. For that reason alone, I bought two earlier this year. Rode later downgraded the high end components in an effort to increase profit. Not exactly your question, but may help you in the decision. _________________ Genus |

Hi Kevin, thanks for jumping in. I wasn't aware of that. I went ahead and got the new model and I have to say, I like it. It's pretty much as advertised. Really low self noise, and a smooth, flat response. On my voice, I think it's helped by a tiny bit of EQ on the low end. _________________ "Be grateful, be happy, work a little harder." |

The new NT1 one is an entirely different sounding mic from the NT1-a. While the NT1-a was low-noise, it was also not the most sensitive condenser, so it needed more gain, thus raising the noise floor when used with typical USB audio interfaces.
A client of mine got one on my suggestion and it .box.com/s/i8rzjp6soo0c1wtvo8zt" target="_blank" class="postlink">sounds quite nice. Here it's used with a Scarlett 2i2 in a not-so-well-tuned-booth, but you get the idea. The sample starts with 10 seconds of room tone, so you can hear how low-noise it is. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I would not be completely agree with George that is entirely different from his younger brother. It is true that need a bit more of gain, but it sounds the same, in my opinion maybe more sonic. The difference is that they eliminate expressed treble, witch is very good. I use it eight months to record radio commercials. A good choice in this price range, but only for male vocalist. I tested it three female vo and I'm not even close satisfied, so I returned them AKG414 _________________ Croatian voice over / producer

What does "in my opinion maybe more sonic" mean? Not entirely different mic, but certainly a smoother top end, agreed. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I'm sorry for my bad english and wrong terms. I rarely speak english and less often i write.
For "sonic sound" i mean that the Rode have improved this mic. in the mindrange and air clarity in the top end. Exactly what George wrote in the last post. Very good choice for us voiceover people. _________________ Croatian voice over / producer

the NT1-A was my first condenser mic (many mics ago) but was actually
pretty good for the $$$. A little on the brite-ish side, and could sound kind of "tinny" to my ear at times, but overall a solid performer.
If the new version is less bright I think that would be a good thing. |

I have an original NT1 - the version that preceded the NT1a. Can anyone offer observation on how this particular one stands in comparison to the new NT1?

As Kevin said earlier without being so direct, the original is a gem, designed by a genius.
Can't speak to its replacements, as I haven't used either of them.... But if you've got one of the originals, I'd keep it. _________________ Don Brookshire

Had to re-read the post. Thanks. Guess it went over my head the first time. |

I've been reading the comments in this thread. Today a salesman at a pro audio shop tried to convince me that the best thing I could buy is a Rode NT1000. I don't believe I've seen much if anything about that particular Rode mic. His selling point was that it surpassed the NT1-a (which he called a "beginner mic") as well as the NT1. Any thoughts? Is it worth the test drive or all hype? He has a couple he's selling for $270 new. _________________ I am impelled, not to squeak like a grateful and apologetic mouse, but to roar like a lion out of pride in my profession. -John Steinbeck |
